Nickserv - Dalnet Class

***************************

This page should not be taken as legal or medical counsel , but only as recommendation from a collection of sources.

Nickserv is a service provided to help users manage their nickname without the use of bots and other scripts. Nickserv stands for "Nickname Service". Once you have a registered nickname (done through Nickserv), all other Nickserv commands become available to you. Nickserv allows you to personalize and control your nickname.

Nickserv operates much like another user, in the sense that you must message it to initialize the commands. A simple example of this is [/msg nickserv help].

For eg:

Before, the syntax for using nickserv was /msg nickserv . The problem that happened was whenever services would 'split' from a server, (meaning services were off a certain server), people would change their nicks to "nickserv" or "chanserv"...

Can you see what the problems would be?

Thats right...those people would get notices from everyone giving out their nick passwords, or even their channel's password!

Server admins changed to "/msg [email protected]" and"/msg [email protected]" It's a safer way to reach services.

Now, when you do contact Nickserv, it will reply to you in your status window. If you do not have a registered nick, the only commands available to you are "register", "help" and "info".

The basic syntax for using nickserv is: type /msg [email protected]

***************************

Basic Commands

***************************

type /msg [email protected] help Allows you to access nickserv's on-line help files it's real handy because not many people remember every command

***************************

type /msg [email protected] register email Command used for nickname registration. Enabling you to own a nick.Registration is complete when you receive your authorization number and apply.

***************************

type /msg [email protected] identify To modify, enable or disable certain settings you will need to identify as the proper owner of the nick; using the password.

***************************

type /msg [email protected] ghost

To kick a user, who is wrongfully using your registered nick, off the server. When someone uses your nick without identifieng nickserv gives them 90 seconds to enter the password if they don't then it kills them from the server and takes control of the nick so they don't try to use it again right away if you don't enter your password and nickserv takes control of your nick you can issue a command to force nickserv to give it back.

***************************

type /msg [email protected] release

Tells nickserv to release your nick from it's custody that is the command to tell nickserv that you own the nick and want it back, if it kills you for not entering your password in time.

***************************

type /msg [email protected] info Used to find information, such as date of registration, url (if any) etc., for a nickname.

***************************

type /msg [email protected] drop Cancels your ownership over a nickname

Nickserv Settings:

***************************

type /msg [email protected] addmask

Adds the your current mask to your nickname access list. Access masks make nickserv a little more convienent but slightly less secure, also the access mask is your user@host info.

***************************

type /msg [email protected] access list

Lists all the masks in your nickname access list.

***************************

type /msg [email protected] access del

Removes a mask from your nickname access list.

***************************

typing /msg [email protected] set address

Adds or modifies your e-mail address you can have nickserv add your email address to the info shown to users who do a /msg [email protected] info on your nick (this is now manditory )

***************************

type /msg [email protected] email

When "off" only IRCops can see your e-mail address

***************************

The next command is the one you can use to prevent others from using your nick

type /msg [email protected] set kill

When "on" nickserv will forcibly remove people wrongfully using your nick but if you use /msg [email protected] set kill on then remember you should identify when you connect each time

***************************

typing /msg [email protected] set passwd Allows you to change the password to your nick

***************************

type /msg [email protected] set url Allows you to add a url to you nickname info if you have a webpage you want others to know about when they look at your nickinfo.

***************************

I Must remind you to keep your passwords protected and change them from time to time , dalnet and the ircoperators will be of little or should I say no help to you if you loose your nickname. This is speaking directly from experence , my nickname was bopper for 2 and 1/2 years , every thing I had on dalnet were set to this nickname. On August 13th ,2000 a 15 year old moron from kuwait hacked my nickname (yes it really can be done dalnet has flaws)I did everything humanly possible to prove to dalnet and ircoperators that I was bopper . I was treated as if I were a liar and was not given a fair chance to speak to the operators in #ophelp , imagine being shocked and upset about loosing your nickname and having to wait for 4 hours in a channel for help to retrieve it.Then when I finally did get an opportunity to speak to an ircoperator , they were rude and impatient , with 2 people asking me questions at the same time.It was humiliating , my suggestion would be not to bother putting yourself though it , if you do in fact loose your nickname.

***************************

This is my opinion ,take from it what you will. Many people on MIRC know I was bopper ,ie. all the operators and visitors to my channel , which I founded in 1998 as bopper along with members of #cyberangels and other channels.

Cyberangels are a wonderful orginization on the web that can help anytime you find yourself in trouble , many thank to them for much of the informatin I will be presenting in these classes.
