Family Readiness Group Weekly Update,
Cluster III Headquarters
Ft. Sam Houston, TX

28 June 2004

Hello again Families, Loved Ones, and Fellow Soldiers.

Three noted events have past since our last published newsletter, and events this week consist mostly of soldiers preparing for a nice, long 4th of July weekend. Our main topic, since it has been the most continuous is the weather. We have had nothing but rain, rain, and more rain pound San Antonio for the past couple of weeks. Through common sense and a little patience we have had no accidents or incidents, but traffic congestion has slowed us down. With this said I would like to ask you to try to guess the rest of the weeks forecast? If you said "rain" you would be correct, however this weekend is supposed to be nice. So for those of you who plan on coming down to San Antonio, you should have a nice 4th of July weekend.

The second main topic, actually happen today with the return of LTC Allison from his school and leave. The staff helped catch LTC Allison up on a few changes and topics of interest over the past month. Some of the noted changes briefed included; moving into another building which is also stationed on Ft. Sam Houston, our total strength drooping due to a few soldiers fulfilling their duty requirements, soldiers assigned to other missions, and a few that left for hardships or other miscellaneous reasons. Overall LTC Allison was impressed, but not too surprised by how we performed during his absence. The 129th FA BN has always done the right thing, with or without the old man, and we felt there was no reason to change that persona about our unit now or ever.

The third event includes six of our Cluster 3 Headquarter soldiers who scored a 90 or higher in each physical training event on our record APFT. LTC Allison, MAJ Mast, SFC Brownfield, SSG Akins, SGT Piburn, and SPC McGinness earned the Physical Training Master Fitness Badge. This badge is worn of the left breast of our PT uniform. Not too many soldiers have this badge, and to have six out of twenty eight soldiers earn this badge is outstanding. On top of these awards our unit average was 258 out of 300 possible points.

4th of July weekend is almost here. A time for America to celebrate it's independence. It kind of reminds me of how Iraq is now struggling to gain its independence from terrorist and dictatorship. Not to get too philosophical but thinking about American history we had a major conflict of interest between colonist both for and against The American Revolutionary War against England. Almost half of the colony did not want to go to war. I wonder where we would be if this proposed half prevailed? Would all of us be speaking with a British accent, or since there would have been no America to help Britain against Germany would all of us be speaking German. The sad truth is for some deranged, powerful, individuals in our world war is the only way we can eliminate them from spreading their fear and hatred to others. Sadam Hussain killed millions of his own people, Bin Laden struck the US the hardest by killing American citizens on our own soil. In a perfect world we would not have terrorist, but unfortunately we do. What would happen if we decided to do nothing? I think Bin Laden helped answer that question. We are only as safe as the rest of the world. Countless lives have been lost keeping the peace, and countless more will be lost in all countries to maintain it.

I pray like most of you for a perfect world, but sadly that's not going to happen any time soon. I salute the men and women who sacrifice their lives to gain and maintain our freedom. God bless you all at home for the support you give us and to our country, and have a great 4th of July.
