FREE HAND FOR A TOUGH COP
(trucido e lo sbirro)

1975 Umberto Lenzi Italy

With: Tomas Milian, Claudio Cassinelli, Biagio Pellegra, Henry Silva and Roberto Undari

I've heard a lot about this flick, and most describe it as a "action-comedy." Well, it ain't. In fact, it's one of Lenzi's more violent and brutal crime efforts. That's not to say there's no laughs in it, of course there's a few good one-liners here and there.

The film begins with the credits rolling over footage from a spaghetti western, but we soon find out it's just a movie being watched in a prison. Tomas Milian, in one of his first "Monezza" roles, decked out in a curly pubic hair wig and eyeliner, gets up to take a shit. In the hall he meets inspector Sarti (Claudio Cassinelli) who slugs him one and sneeks him outta jail.

It tuns out that Sarti busted Milian, who goes by the name "Garbage Can," out of jail because his friend kidnapped a girl who has cancer or something and has to be in the hospital for something or she'll die.

Three thugs (Biagio Pelligra, Roberto Undari, and some other goon) almost get busted by the cops while robbing the mail car on a train. They Manage to escape and hide out in an old ship which looks like the same one used for a hide out in The Executioner, but i'm not sure. Anyway, Milian convinces them that Brescianelli (Henry Silva) tipped off the cops. They join up with Garbage Can to find the girl and get revenge.

This flick has a lot going for it. Good acting, Milian hamming it up, Cassinelli stone-faced and pissed off through out, and Henry Silva makes "motherfucker" sound so cool. Then there's the story, which actually makes sense, is somewhat original, and isn't just unrelated scenes of random crimes, not that there's anything wrong with that, but a storyline's nice sometimes. And there's the action. Several cool car chases and shootouts, and lots of bloody violence. Lenzi did't skimp on the squibs this time around.

Very satifying crime/action with few flaws. Right up there with The Tough Ones and The Cynic, The Rat And The Fist.

Oddly, in '77 Milian teamed up with Lenzi again for Brothers Till We Die where he played brothers, one was the same "Garbage Can" character renamed "Pigsty" and Pino Colizzi played a cop named Sarti, though the two films aren't connected in any oher way.
