RUN AND KILL

1993 Billy Tang Hong Kong

Starring: Kent Cheng, Simon Yam, Danny Lee, Melvin Wong, Wang Lung-Wei

Really sick, really funny and really cool HK action monstrosity produced by Danny Lee (The Killer), starts off as a silly comedy complete with poop and fat guy sight-gags quickly turns ugly as the story progresses.

Kent Chang stars as Fatty Chung ('cause he's fat, get it?), a loving family man who's wife whores around all day and takes all his money. He repeatedly catches her in bed with other men, but always blames himself. After one such occassion, a distraught Fatty goes to a bar and gets shitfaced. Through a series of coincidences, he mistakingly hires a hitman to kill his wife and her lover.

The next morning, two men bust into his house and brutally murder his wife in front of him. Fatty, not remembering the events of the previous night, tries to stop them, but gets a good kick in the head instead.

The police question Fatty about the murder, and he slowly remembers what happened. He rushes back to the bar to find out if he really did hire the killers, and to his horror he finds that not only did he have his wife killed, but that he owes the Triads $100,000!

Unable to pay, the Triads burn down his business and Fatty is forced to flee the city. He hooks up with some VietNamese merceneries, and one of them (Simon Yam from Full Contact) decides to settle the score with the gangsters.

In a porn theatre Fatty meets with the Triads. The merceneries get the jump on them, but are soon overpowered. Fatty along with two others, are kidnapped.

In a refugee camp, Fatty is held captive, while one of the other hostages is tied up to a wall, and has a bamboo tube stuck into his knee so that a steady stream of blood flows from his leg. The poor kid with the tube in his knee just happens to be Simon Yam's brother, and Yam is quite pissed.

Yam pretty much single handedly wipes out the camp with a nasty looking Rambo knife and a machine gun. After freeing his brother and Fatty, he tells Fatty that if his brother dies, he will kill his whole family. Needless to say, the brother dies, and now Fatty has the Triads and the crazed mercenery on his ass.

There's some truely jaw-dropping shit happening in this movie, graphic violence and sick humour combined in an almost John Waters-ish way, although much more stylish. Fatty's Mother is thrown out a window, and his daughter is burned to death before his eyes. Yam picks up the burnt and disfigured corpse and in a little girls voice says "Daddy, i'm so dark, do you recognize me."

The over-the-top conclusion in a warehouse is hillarious, with Yam refusing to die, coming back from explosions and impalments like Jason Vorhees or Wile E. Coyote.

A fucking great film, which i most highly recommend.
