HARD-BOILED
(Lashou Shentan)

1992 John Woo Hong Kong

With: Chow Yun Fat, Tony Leung, Teresa Mo, Phillip Chan, Phillip Kwok, Anthony Wong

The last of Woo's Hong Kong films, Hard-Boiled, is one of the most outrageous and over the top action films ever made.

The film opens with a bang as Chow yun fat, a police officer, tries to arrest some gun smugglers in a tea house. The shootout that follows is amazing. Woo lives up to his name as the best action director working today, as the well-choreographed bloodshed begins, and rarely lets up until the end credits roll.

Chow teams up with Tony Leung, a cop posing as a triad in order uncover the gun smuggling ring.

They end up in a huge hospital where the basement serves as a gun cache`. Once the traids learn of their presence, they start blowing the place up! The final shootout is one of the most epic gun battles ever, literally hundreds of people shot and blown up. Director John Woo actually filmed a three minute action sequence all in one take, something that took weeks to pull off. The scene where Chow flees the exploding building nearly killed the actor as Woo insisted on having him as close to the fire as possible.

A highly recommended film for fans of Hong Kong cnema, John Woo, Chow Yun Fat or just action films in general. Only slightly inferior to the earlier Woo film The Killer
