The Fremont Cup began in 2007 as a celebration of Ohio’s first State & National Scenic River - the Little Miami - and the people who contributed to that success. The signature event is named in honor of Mike Fremont, who founded Rivers Unlimited in 1972 and continues to work tirelessly as an advocate for the protection and restoration of rivers across the state. For 2009, the Fremont Cup will take place on the Great Miami River, too often dismissed as the “big ugly brother” of its scenic counterpart to the east. Draining 5,385 square miles of southwest Ohio, the Great Miami offers plenty of water for the paddler and a wide diversity of habitats for fish, fowl and other wildlife. Unfortunately, the river is also prized by agricultural, mining and other industrial interests that have contributed to degradation of water quality and a significant loss of riparian corridor. The 3rd annual Fremont Cup will highlight the efforts of Friends of the Great Miami, participants in RU’s Adopt-a-Stream program and other individuals and organizations working to restore this great natural resource and turn it into another Ohio scenic river success story. The day will begin with the start of the 19-mile Fremont Cup in Hamilton. The FOGM 5-miler (race) and the FOGM Float (recreational float) will both launch from Obergiesing Soccer Complex, f/k/a Dravo Park, in Colerain Township. And for those of you who fall somewhere between a sprint and marathon, this year’s event offers a middle distance race, the 10-mile Great Miami Classic, which starts at Heritage Park in Colerain Township. The staggered starting times and locations mean everyone will be finishing up together in Miamitown, where we’ll celebrate with a picnic lunch, door prizes, entertainment, and an awards ceremony for race winners.
