Blood Wars: Chapter 4/ The Hospital Disclaimer: Everything belongs to me, my hubby Chris, my baby sister Jeannie, and I owe alot of thanks to Beth, who helped me out alot. Plus special thanks to Esther for her guidance. Rating: Beeping sounds going off to my left woke me from a dreamless sleep. I slowly turned my head toward the noise to find bright red numbers flashing at me. My neck was a little sore and stiff, taking a great deal of effort to move it around. I looked around my surroundings to find myself lying in a hospital bed. There was an IV hooked up to my left hand, while a dim light lit the room like a candle would, showing the shadows against the wall. A TV hung from the ceiling to my right over the sink. On both sides of the sink sat two large wooden doors. The one to the right of the sink was ajar, while the other one was completely closed. I moved my hand along the railing to find the up and down buttons on the bed. Once Id found them, I began to raise the bed to a sitting position. The motion of the bed going up jerked my neck enough for me to grit my teeth in pain. I was sitting upright when the door left of the sink opened up to reveal a slender woman in her mid-forties. Her hair was brown with streaks of grey, while her soft hazel eyes sat behind a pair of gold framed glasses. She was wearing a white coat that went down to her knees revealing a pair of green slacks and brown dress shoes. She smiled at me and said, "Good evening Ms. Duncan. Im happy to see that youve rejoined us here in the land of the living. Im Dr. Warren." I tried to smile and replied, "Thanks and it's nice to meet you. I assume this is the hospital." She sat down on the edge of my bed with a nod of her head and replied, "Actually your at 75th St. Medical Center and you gave us quite a scare, specially your family." "How long have I been in here?" I asked while nibbling on my lower lip. She looked at me and tilted her head studying me for a moment, then answered my question, "Youve been here for the past twenty four hours. Sergent O'Brian went looking for you when your sister called him about your disappearance. They found you in, what your family terms, "No Man's Land". They also found three other bodies about a mile or so down the beach from where they found you. O'Brian said you were still alive, but just barely and rushed you here." "I'm surprised they found me alive after what I went through last night." I whispered to myself more than to her. But I think she heard me, cause her right brow shot up, but she let it slipped and moved on, "Can you tell me what exactly happened last night?" I tried to adjust the bed so I could sit up more comfortably and said, "Im not sure. Its all coming and going in pieces. I cant tell what parts are real and what wasnt real." She raised an eyebrow and studied me for a minute, then questioned, "Tell me what you can remember and please take your time. I dont want you to try too hard, let it come to you when its ready." I glanced at her and said, "I went back out to the beach after O'Brian escorted Pam and I back to our hotel room. It was like something was pulling me out into the storm. I stood on the ocean front for a few moments and had turned to come back, when something came out of no where and grabbed me by my shoulders. It began going upwards taking me with it. It had sharp claws that dug into my shoulders. I tried to break it's hold and it dug deeper, causing me to scream in pain. When that happened a bright hot light came out of nowhere and blinded me and did something to what ever had me. It dropped me in mid air. I feel and landed on something that made a crunching noise. I pulled myself to my feet and examined myself to see if anything was broken. The light that I had mention before was coming from me. I'm not sure how that happened, but glad it did. I turned toward where I had land and there were three dead bodies lying there. I believe they are the same ones you mentioned earlier. That's all I can remember at the moment." She was taking notes as I spoke, then stood up and walked around the bed to check my IV. She jotted down more notes while talking more to herself than to me, "That explains most of your wounds but not the ones to your neck." I glared at her and said, "Excuse me. What did you just say?" Doctor Warren sighed and stated with sadness in her eyes, "When O'Brian brought you in you had punctured wounds on your neck and you had lost a lot of blood. I figured that's why your blood count was down and what ever attacked you took it. We had to give you a blood transfusion on your arrival. The wounds in your neck needed twenty stitches. You were very lucky. It seems that your attacker must have thought you were dead to leave you along the shore line like that." "Oh," was all I could say. She finally scribbled her last bit of notes and shut her clip board. "Are you hungry," she asked. I nodded my head and she said, "Good I'll have something brought to you immediately." Dr. Warren was headed out the door, when a thought hit me. "Um Dr. Warren, why did you question me about what happened. Don't the police normally do that," I asked. She smiled at me, but I saw the panic in her eyes when she anwered, "O'Brian wanted me to do it for him, while he went back out to where you were found. He's hoping to find some sort of evidence that will lead him to the murderer." I stared at her with my eyes bugged out and actually felt real fear for the first time in my life. Last night was somewhat of a blur but what I do remember was starting to scare the living shit out of me. Mom was probably scared to death as well and knowing her she wasn't going to let me out of her site for the rest of my life or until she kicks the bucket. O'Brien would be sticking to my family like glue now, even more than ever too. What's worse is that I know who the murderer was, or technically what he was. If I had told Dr. Warren the whole truth, she probably be rolling in the floor laughing or calling the people in the white coats after me. There's a vampire running lose in the city and it's got a dragon for a pet. Not sure if it will do him any good now that I've hurt it, but you never know what tomorrow will hold. As for me, I hope it's the last time I see him. That thought made me shiver and I grabbed a hold of my pillow like it was a life line, protecting me from the big bad nightmare. |
