| In-Class Assignment Assignment: Write a story of character X from the given description of the scene. Time: 10 minutes Dusk. Sound of soft rain. Fully dressed, character X lies on the bed, gazing up at the ceiling. After a moment, X gets up slowly and crosses to the dresser against the opposite wall. ------------------------ Shannon stood up and crossed to the dresser. He felt heavy; his shoulders were slouched more than normal. His long limbs moved smoothly through the monotonous sound of light rain. The room was gray and bleak, but Shannon did not notice. He picked up the picture and sat down on the corner of the dresser. Even on such a piece of furniture, he proceeded to sprawl himself out and relax. Shannon cradled the picture in his lap. His dark blue eyes were surprisingly dim, like the sky. If anyone that had known him had seen him in that moment, they would have hardly recognized him. His comet-bright eyes and neon vibrant personality had all strangely disappeared. He stared with those marble eyes at the picture he'd stared at ten thousand times before. It was the favorite picture of his mother from when Shannon was only eight years old. She had shiny, sun-streaked hair and a beautiful smile, a smile that said true happiness. She was kneeling next to Shannon in the picture, his bright, unsuspecting eyes mirroring his mother's. They both smiled naturally at the camera... they had nothing not to smile about. Yet. A stone blue eye was suddenly lined with a silver glimmer. Shannon stared into those eyes that had once held so much life and asked himself again, Why? Why her? She was the last person on earth that deserved to die. Why her? Why then? But it was no use. As they never had before, no answers came now. A single and somber tear slid down a bony cheek in the damp, cold darkness of the room, and Shannon cried. Through the pittar-patter of the raindrops and the silent sobbing of a lost soul, one would have heard the words, "Happy Birthday, Mom." |
