Language Requirements
Yowie! A comment from someone! But is it serious?

Jeff says:

You mention on your best policies page [ www.PoliticalPlatform.net ] that immigrants should need to know English before entry into the US, among other prerequisites.

No. But they should be able to recognize a "stop" sign and maybe a few other things. The language requirement for new citizens should be more demanding than for guest workers who don't become citizens. New citizens should know enough English to be able to vote with a ballot in English. States should not have to print ballots in languages other than English.

I think it wise that the same treatment should be enforced upon natural born citizens of the US. Namely that we should be required to know Spanish, and that we should be able to pass any test required of immigrants.

Assuming you're serious, why not also require all citizens to speak Swahili and Chinese and Hebrew and Danish and so on? No, the English requirement for immigrants or new citizens is only for practicality. There is no practical need for U.S. citizens to have to learn any language other than English. It would be OK for states to impose foreign language requirements for their school students. Requiring one year of a foreign language would make sense. Or 2 years.
