Abolish All Welfare.

a challenge to debate from [email protected]

Thesis:

All forms of welfare should be abolished (including corporate welfare, such as granting tax credits to companies as a bribe for them to locate a factory in your town). It is wrong for any person or class of people to leech off others, no matter what the reason. There is no moral or ethical obligation for anyone to sacrifice for the benefit of another. Such leeching encourages people to become irresponsible and dependent on others.

Virtually everyone who claims to be "needy" could in fact become self-sufficient in the modern economy, even the elderly. The solution for them is to be put to use in society so that they produce value for others. There are plenty of real needs for people to meet so they can become contributing members of society without living off the work of others.

This means abolishing every aid program which is based on pity or sympathy for the recipients. The only programs which are justified are ones which ultimately benefit the taxpayers who must subsidize them, returning equal or greater benefit than the cost of the program. This benefit to society must be more than a mere extortion promise from the recipients that, in return for their benefits, they will not raise hell or commit crimes, etc.

Neither pity nor extortion are a legitimate basis for a government program.
