Information taken from DMA MAGAZINE's
interview with Cynthia (Vol. 5, Issue 12) - December 1997.
Anyone who's been in a dance club in the last decade is sure
to be familiar with this Diva who brought about the dance floor
romper, "CHANGE ON ME". A lot has changed since then;
for one, Cynthia has matured to become a well known Freestyle
Diva in even today's age, and she's also became a proud mommy
to her baby boy.
Born in New York and raised in Spanish Harlem, Cynthia first
realized she wanted to sing when she was 12. Her mom took her
in for singing lessons to learn to sing opera. "Totally
different type of training. But it disciplined me. I didn't want
to do opera. Just music in general makes me happy," says
the talented diva. "Going to voice lessons and learning
something new excited me."
At the age of 16, Cynthia along with two school mates, friend
and fellow diva, SAFIRE and another girl formed her first own
singing group and later hooked up with KAYEL (also known as the
"K" in the Freestyle 80's group, TKA). KAYEL helped
the trio perfect their singing style.
In 1987, SAFIRE called up a couple of producers she knew to tell
them about Cynthia. An audition was arranged and Cynthia went
to the club where the record producer was a judge for a contest.
She sang for him in a stairwell and he suggested that she come
back in a week and audition again.
Two weeks later she had a recording contract for MICMAC RECORDS
in front of her. Under the indie label, Cynthia scored several
dance hits, including "CHANGE ON ME," "ENDLESS
NIGHTS" and the hit duet with fellow freestyle artist, JOHNNY
O - "DREAM BOY, DREAM GIRL." Two well received albums
were released as well - "CYNTHIA" and "CYNTHIA
II."
Cynthia later went on to sign with TOMMY BOY/TIMBER! RECORDS
in 1992, which for a while put a stall on her career. It would
be another two-and-a-half years later before she would release
her next single, "HOW I LOVE HIM" under the production
team work of JOEY GARDNER and TONY MORAN. Long after her next
anticipated single, "LIKE A STAR" was released. As
of date, Cynthia's latest single out under TOMMY BOY/TIMBER!
is currently "IF I HAD THE CHANCE." A full length
album is out in the works and should be due out soon. A quick
quote from Cynthia, "...if you believe in yourself and put
your mind to something, you can accomplish whatever you want."
=)
As of current, plans for a full
length album release under TOMMY BOY/TIMBER! Records may have
changed... Cynthia has currently signed a deal with ROBBINS ENTERTAINMENT
- the name behind such hits as Rockell and Victoria Angeles.
Also joining her in the move is another legend in the freestyle
scene, George LaMond. Word has it that Cynthia will be releasing
an album with Robbins on June 15th. More info to come later...
Until then, check out her latest single for TOMMY BOY/TIMBER!,
THINKING ABOUT YOU.
And as promised, after a very
very long wait, as of June 15th, Cynthia's new album - "THINKING
ABOUT YOU" has been released under Robbins Entertainment
and TIMBER! Records with 12 slamming tracks which includes her
past singles, "IF I HAD THE CHANCE" (check out Tony
Moran's Old School Mix!), "HOW I LOVE HIM," and "LIKE
A STAR." All I have to say about the new album is for one,
it's about time! and two, it's well worth the wait! =) I hope
this album brings this legendary diva all the success she deserves
and then some.
