While it's great to be enrolled in as many frequent flyer programs as possible, the best way to get enough mileage to earn an award is to focus on one program. Otherwise you'll earn a few miles here, a few miles there, and it will take a lot longer for it to add up. When choosing a frequent flyer program, the first question to ask is -- do they fly where you want to go? And if they don't, can you redeem mileage on an airline that does?
