Diamonds

A small hand reaches up toward the shop window, "Ma, ma, ma!" the tiny voice shouts.

***** ***** *****

The breeze plays through her long golden hair as he slips the ring on her finger. She looks up from her hand to his face, smiling, eyes twinkling like the sun. He steals the promised kiss, looking up and laughing as she runs across the playground, clenching her fist to keep the ring from falling to the ground.

A young girl leans against the counter laughing with her friends. In a sudden wave of laughter the table is knocked over. A saleslady quickly ushers the girls from the store. The girl sits under a tree, forming a solitary silhouette against the sunset. Her golden hair blazes in the red sunlight. A hand reaches down, pulling out a string which holds a bright little sun.

In the flickering candlelight she toys with the diamond necklace and slowly reaches out to accept the ring. In a soft, whispering voice, "Yes".

In a black casket rests an aged woman covered with diamonds. The lid closes out the sunlight forever, and the man turns to walk away.
