The Anatomy of a Tear

by Karen A. Freeman

I was washed ashore on a tear.

       Life began.

The ocean swells with tears:

       tears for all the sorrows,
       tears for all the pain,
tears for all the broken hearts.

Tears on the sand:

       tears we see,
       tears we know,
tears not swept away in a vast nothing.
       tears remembered,
       tears shared.

Tears of knowledge:

       tears for science,
       tears for man,
tears for the end of all things,
tears for the home he once knew,
       tears for the unborn children,
tears for what might have been.

Tears swept out to sea.

       Life ends.
