Letter to a Friend

by Karen A. Freeman

Dear Friend,

You said you'd always be there when I needed you, all I'd have to do is call.
You said you'd always be my friend . . . forever.
      You say you still are.
I said I'd do the very same for you . . . and I still will.
I said I'd be your friend and I was.
I say I'm not your friend any more. Oh, I'm still around. I'll be there when you need me . . . if you ever do, but I'm not your friend.
A friend is someone who comes when you need them, not because you ask; how could anyone turn their back? A friend knows you inside and out. You can't hide from a friend, they'll always know when you're hurting behind a smile or need to talk behind a laugh. No, you're not my friend. You never could see beyond yourself! So many times I sat and listened to your problems . . . the one's you never asked to share. So many times I sat there wishing you would ask me what was on my mind.
I just wrote to say, I'm not your friend anymore, but I still care. Anytime you need me I'll still be there. If you see my point, and if you still care, will you be my friend? You see, I need a friend, and there's no one there.
