Wayne lived fast, drove fast and had a swagger that would put John Wayne to shame. He was the character of the 3 boys.
Walter Rhodes loved to fish, no matter the size of the water, retired from Southwestern Public Service Company in Beaver, Oklahoma, moving right back to Eufaula. Walter and Donnie moved across the road from Lake Eufaula. Donnie lives there still.
MILITARY: In Company H. of the 180th Infantry Regiment Homer C. Rhodes, Eufaula Oklahoma was a gunner on a light machine gun, and saw the members of his squad, one by one become casualties. Without hesitiation he took over the duties of assistant gunner and ammunition bearer for another gun in addition to his own duties. Disregarding the heavy German mortar barrages which were falling, he remained with his gun. When his gun became to hot to use, he made a trip across the open ground to get another one. He fired so much that his ammunition was exhausted and went to get more, not only for himself, but also for other gunners.
He was awarded the Bronze Star. From "The Story of the 180th Infantry Regiment"Self taught himself to play the steele guitar.
Retired from Southern Union Gas Company in Hooker, Oklahoma, and moved to Lenna,Oklahoma where he loved to fish, coon hunt and watch the Oklahoma Sooners football team on TV. He raised the flag every morning and lowered it every eve.
