| Popular Versus Electoral Vote by Lady Macbeth |

| America was created by the people and for the people. Or at least, that is what it states in the United States Constitution. If this is what our country is based upon, shouldnt we get too directly pick who we want to enforce this written code ourselves? The answer is yes, we should. It would be better to elect the president directly ourselves than to elect people to do the job for us. (This being the Electoral College) This is why the Electoral College should be demolished and direct election by popular vote should be the one and only thing to elect our president.
According to Bruce Bartlett in November of 2000, polls have consistently shown large majorities of Americans favoring direct election of the president over the Electoral College. So, you see, even the majority of the populous want direct election to happen. However, no one is doing anything about it. According to a government site, the awareness of how indirectly the people of this country elect their president comes as a shock to most people. Even the government knows about this, and is not taking action in giving the people what they want. The candidate who wins the most popular votes in an election gets all of the state's electoral votes stated Ben White from the Washington Post. So basically, forget all of the other people who voted for the opposing candidate. That side of the popular vote isnt represented by the state. But who cares, right? Well, we do! Our voting right altogether can be taken away because the popular vote is not embedded in the constitution at all. We need to take action and do something about it! Lets take a trip back in time, all the way back to 1823. I have ever considered the constitutional mode of election, ultimately by the Legislature voting by States, as the most dangerous blot in our Constitution, and one which some unlucky chance will some day hit and give us a pope and antipope. Thomas Jefferson said in a letter to George Hay, Jefferson referring to the Electoral College. One reason the founding fathers had the Electoral College put in the Constitution was because there was limited communication with many states and they wanted to make sure that candidates everywhere in the nation were considered. Well, today there are TVs, radios, computers, cars for transportation, and all other modern modes of communication that make it easy for everyone to know who is up for election and what their opinions and policies are. Everyone knows whats going on and who is for what now, and if they dont, it is because they dont want to know. We should be able to choose who we want to be elected. The people of this country arent Incompetent. If we really want to elect someone, we will, and if we dont, we wont. Freedom of choice, its that simple. So, do you see? There are many reasons the Electoral College should be demolished and direct vote by the populous brought to action. Everyone should get a say in the elections. We should be the ones to elect our representatives, not people we dont even know. So, fight for your freedom, fight for your rights, fight for your direct vote! |
