Lorna Sanchez, the Artist

The tragic attack last Sept. 11 has changed everyone's lives. This has been apparent especially to the people directly affected with the loss of a loved one or those who have been called to defend & protect freedom. Lorna Sanchez, a wife of an airman at Eglin Air Force Base, FL is just one of the many who felt the anxiety of having her husband gone. During that time, she felt the need to do something that could make a difference. Being unemployed gave her the time to embark on a project and as an artist, she put her painting skills to work. She decided to work on a large project that could help the Families of September 11 Fund and America's Fund for Afghan Children.

Freedom in our Hearts, the painting

The oil painting was done on two (30"x 80") bi-fold doors and this partly symbolized the message of the artwork which was, "the door to our hearts". The artist depicted this by painting a colorful garden with the firefighters raising the flag. She explains, "When you look at this painting - you feel good. The spirit we feel as a free nation can be seen through the vibrant colors used in this artwork. It also symbolizes peace, hope and the heroes that paid the price."
