"The other person that became as a brother to me is Fesshaye Johaness. He was my direct boss (and I wish all the bosses were like him) We worked together every single day of those nearly 15 months; we lived under the same roof for 6 months; he did for me much more that was his duty as my boss, he helped me anytime I had a problem...."more

"When I hear you and your colleagues are in "undisclosed location", words fail me. When Yemane Gebreab says maybe your will be brought to court, maybe you won`t, words fail me. So I`ve borrowed these words from a poet (Bono.) It is a song about the biblical Joshua Tree and a place "where the streets have no name." Someday, you will prevail and sa street will be named after you in a free Eritrea. ... "more

"You are an inspiration to all peace loving people fighting for justice because whenever your people needed you were always there responding affirmatively to their causes. When we needed independence you were there. When we needed freedom you were there. What more does a hero give or do?"

"..May be they do not know how fiercely patriotic you are! Or is it that they do not want to know? Joshua, I can list so many examples as to why you should not be referred with contempt and that you should be respected; alas brother, this message board allows only limited words. And besides, you are not of the boastful type!"more

"I say you are incompetent Mike Sium. The award is not a "Daniel Pearl award". Had you done your homework right, you would have found that it is a "Burton Benjamin Memorial Award". The Burton Benjamin Memorial Award honors the late CBS News senior producer and former CPJ chairman, who died in 1988. I am not going to have a pissing match with an incompetent "investigative reporter" about whether or not Joshua deserves this award. His work, during the struggle for independence, and after independence, speaks for itself. No matter how hard you try to defame him, no matter how hard you try to present him as a "traitor", you are not going to succeed. For he is beyond reproach! Period." more

"You are the voice of the voiceless. You are a teacher and a student of our revolution. I assure you, you will have a significant place in the heart of the Eritrean People for generations to come. You are the master of your soul unlike many cowards serving the rotten DIA."more

Truth-Tellers in a Time of Terror
A good person to answer that -- why not Eritrea? -- might be Fesshaye Yohannes, 47, a noted Eritrean journalist and playwright. Fesshaye fought for Eritrea's independence from Ethiopia and then, once it was achieved, established what became the nation's largest-circulation newspaper.. ..Unfortunately, you can't ask him. Eritrea's government has had him locked up for more than a year, and won't say where or, for that matter..
Judgement day for joshua
People who knew Joshua, like Yves Sorokob, African desk director of CPJ and the writer of this article gave their testimonials. I for one was extremely proud and sad. Proud of Joshua and all Eritrean journalists who by their courage and heroic stance against tyranny have opened a chapter not only in Eritrean but also in African journalism in general...
