And then there were the beautiful privileged. They went through adolescence unscathed. They were above you because they made you below them. They got lucky I suppose. They lacked just enough heart, compassion, and conscience that they could mock you without a second thought.
High school came and cliques became even more defined. The ‘unpopular’ were finally given a chance to rise in rank on the social ladder. They found their niche in other cliques. And simplified, like very pop culture to which the popular crowd belonged was your ever present counter-culture to which your ‘outsiders’ belonged. Probably best embodied within punk music and the punk scene, these kids belonged to a massive movement. Although not the most amazing kids ever, each had their positive qualities. They may not have had the most money or the coolest clothes or a car to drive, but somehow they managed to stay happy. These kids were bad, had fun, and held a bitterness to pop culture. These two cultures, the popular and the counter, have been very much defined…until now.
Punk, over the past year has become a trend. Yeah, local music probably hit a peak (recently) in the early 90s with the Seattle scene. Local grunge bands got their break (i.e. Nirvana, candlebox, etc). Yeah, some did not last in the big time but pop culture, MTV, and other pop culture organizations are forever changed. Some underground scene has always influenced pop culture. They have to pull their trends from somewhere. Whether it is a sound, look, or lifestyle, they plug it into the mainstream and ultimately ruins it. The trend is defaced and destroyed. This is because, in its true pure form, it was not meant to survive in the pop culture environment. It is bred and therefore should be rightfully killed in the underground.
But instead of just taking an aspect of the counter culture, for some odd reason, the pop culture (or pop society in my school and surrounding areas) is taking the whole scene for their own. I do not know why. It does not make any sense. All I know is that it will destroy everything: my life, my society, and the whole world as a whole. When things like this happen, it acts like an infection. It spreads like a disease, an un-killable virus. It grows like a cancer. It’s like abolishing world hunger and terminating the poor class; it’s impossible.
The whole point of the counter-culture is to be against the pop culture. In a great effort by the scene, its has sustained itself to near perfection. It has existed fine by itself. For some, it is all they have. It is their lifeline. Now, their lifeline has been taken away.
What will they have to come up with now? Where do they go? What should they resort to? This particular counter-culture, the punk scene, has been around since the 1970s. These damn pop pests are going to obliterate everything. Why? This is probably because of the same reasons why they are running towards it. The scene is bad, rebellious and ‘untouched’. Thus it has some sort of appeal. But if these ‘clean-cut’ kids (minus their weed smoking habits) enter the scene, it will no longer be untouched. They will corrupt it and change it forever. They will suck the life out of it, and then leave. They will be like the Germanic tribes at the fall of the Roman Empire.
As the stupid preppy says, “Down with the system!” And has no concept on how this would work. Or why it is good or bad. Because he is in the system. They system works for him! Why would he want to destroy the very system that has made him who he is? Especially since we all know he is happy with what he has become.
