Authorities on this agricultural world have announced the discovery and arrest of a number of "sleeper" agents in high places in the planetary government. A press release issued by Naval Intelligence did not to reveal names, but said that the agents were citizens of the Sworld Worlds, disguised a s locals, who had apparently spent years (in one case decades) working their way unobtrusively into the highest councils of the planetary government.
According to the press release, the agents were to break the vital jump-1 route to Regina and the war zone by turning the world against the Imperium and destroying or impounding supply vessels on their way to the front.
No information is available on how the "sleepers" were discovered. The press release explains that Naval Intelligence does not wish to compromise Imperial agents in Zhodani or Sword Worlds territory.
p10:
The Abyss Campaign: The sieges of Efate and Jewell, although neither succeeded in taking its target world, served othe purposes in the grand Zhodani scheme for the war. The major purpose was the diversion of Imperial fleet strength coreward, toward the naturally vulnerable Regina subsector and away from the Abyss.
The abyss is a natural lack of stars which cuts through Vilis and Lanth subsectors. Even jump-4 ships are relatively restricted in their possible routes across the subsectors.
The Zhodani committed themselves to the Abyss Campaign in three steps: a move to the Imperial border, creation of a solid break in the Imperial front lines, and a follow-through deep thrust to Rhylanor. The plan could spell the fall of Rhylanor and the capitulation of the Imperium; the Zhodani depended on the plan to win the war for them.
At the start of the war, the Abyss lay behind the Imperial lines and was not the specific responsibility of any Fleet. As the Zhodani 15th Fleet pushed closer to the border (mid-1108), the potential threat was recognized and the Corridor Fleet assigned to protect the region.
Almost immediately, the Corridor Fleet was diverted to reinforce the threatened regions of the Regina subsector. The pressure of the Zhodani 1st Assault Fleet at Efate in late 1108 induced Admiral Santanocheev tomove the Corridor Fleet into Regina subsector. That move left the Abyss open just as the Zhodani 40th Fleet broke through at the border and pushed for the Abyss.
The 40th Fleet began its deep thrust in early 1109. Because it would have to occupy and hold systems as it pushed across the Abyss, the fleet would have to be reinforced with additional squadrons. Ships from the 1st and 3rd Fleets were transferred as secretly as possible. With an overstrength in squadrons and troops loaded in troop transports, the 40th Fleet pushed forward.
Between 170-1109 and 200-1109, the 40th Fleet took Mirriam (1315), Calit (1515), Ghandi (1815), Ylaven (1916), Quopist (2215), and Tureded (2414). Their first surprise came at Fulacin (2613).
Before the war, the Zhodani had secretly established a forward base at Fulacin. That base was intended to supply the final assault on Rhylanor. The world's insignificant population would not interfere with Zhodani troop strengths or ship movements; the effort of reducing a world to create a base would be avoided.
Instead, the Zhodani found that their secret base had been discovered, eliminated, and Imperial troops inserted in its place. Faced with a choice between taking a destroyed base and establishing a new one, the 40th Fleet retreated back to Tureded and established their base there.
From the Tureded base, the 40th Fleet jumped off to attack and invade both Porozlo (2715) and Rhylanor (2716).
Through mid-1109, the stand-off at Efate and Jewell kept Imperial fleet forces occupied. As the Zhodani forces were reduced, so more Imperial squadrons could be diverted to other fronts. Enough intelligence miscues were provided by the Zhodani to keep Admiral Santanocheev off-balance - he was led to believe that the ship movements were a fake, and that a major thrust would come at Efate sometime during 1109.
When Duke Norris of Regina seized power on 132-1109, he took immediate steps to consolidate his own control of the fleets. Immediate reinforcements were directed to 23rd Fleet, which then retook Mirriam and Calit, cutting off the Zhodani 40th Fleet's line of communications and escape route.
By 10-1109, he had diverted the Corridor Fleet from the vicinity of Roup (2007) and Feri (2005) to Rhylanor and Porozlo.
The clash between the Imperial Corridor Fleet and the Zhodani 40th Fleet was bloody, but quick. The reduction of Rhylanor called for surprise; in the face of intense opposition and substantial Imperial reinforcements, the attack could not succeed. The 40th Fleet broke off once its losses reached critical levels, and headed back toward the border.
On 348-1109, the 40th Fleet was ambushed at Calit (1515) by elements of the 23rd Fleet and severely mauled before it could escape and race across the border.
p84: Lanth Subsector
Lanth subsector is dominated by the Abyss to spinward and the the Spinward Main to trailing. Most of the subsector's worlds lie on the main, making this subsector a major highway for trade. The world of Tureded is a particularly important trade nexus, linking two arms of the main. It is a curiosity of Lanth subsector that the capital, Lanth, is separated from the majority of the worlds of the subsector by the Abyss, and is only accessible through Lunion subsector or by jump-4. This is not very important to naval or some scout vessels, but has repercussions for trade. Ivendo, Icetina, Tureded and Extolay are preferred as trade stations to distant Lanth.
p88: 2414 Tureded (Imperial) - Amber Zone
Starport: Class IV.
Diameter: 5,980 miles (5,980 km). Atmosphere: Normal. Population: 689,000. Government: Representative democracy. Control Rating: 0. TL: 9.
Tureded is a "breadbasket" world, providing foodstuffs to markets across the region. The port is also a major market where goods of all types change hands. The locals have a liberal attitude toward self-defense and personal armament, believing that any amount of force is justifiable in defense of their person or property. There is considerable friction within society, and shootings are becoming increasingly common. A recent phenomenon is the formationof roving bandit gangs, which prey on the agricultural settlements.
Apart from a light system-defense squadron, Tureded has little in the way of organized military forces, instead relying on a fyrd system in the event of attack - the citizens turn out with their personal arsenal to repulse any invaders. When a mercenary force fighting for the Zhodani Consulate attempted to take the world during theFifth Frontier War, the locals proved incapable of resisting the initial invasion, but then mounted an intensive guerrilla campaign combined with sabotage in the starport facilities that effectively denied the port to the Zhodani. This action has stood as a deterrent ever since, with the Turededians effectively stating, "We can't afford the forces we'd need to prevent an invasion, but we can make the occupation hell for you."
The highport has recently been improved at the expense of several private corporations and the Imperial Ministry of Trade. The importance of Tureded as a trade nexus has grown in recent years, while at the same time the locals have made sure that the new prosperity has been confined to the highport by earning themselves an amber label. Negotiations toward opening a scout base in the system were broken off as the Fifth Frontier War broke out. A new initiative to create an Xboat link through Tureded is finally being launched.
