Fred Ewanuick in Robson Arms (2005 - )

Season 2 of Robson Arms is now on (winter/spring 2007)! Also, the Season 1 DVD is available in stores now.

Robson Arms is a new Canadian "dramedy" television series that first aired on CTV on Friday, June 17th 2005 with two back-to-back half-hour episodes. Following the 2-episode premiere, the show was initially supposed to continue with one episode weekly on Fridays at 10:30pm, but for some reason this changed, with two episodes every Friday starting at 10:00pm.

Robson Arms is the name of a low-rise apartment building that has seen better days, and the series tells the stories of those living within. Fred plays a character called Nick Papathanasiou (even more challenging to figure out how to pronounce and spell than Fred's last name!) and appears in episode 3 ("The Eyes of Grandma Tan"), 6 ("Sweet City Woman"), 9 ("The Lonely Passion of Mr. Tan"), and 11 ("The Recipe"), and possibly others as well.

The show's website describes Nick as a 28-year old "who's awfully uptight, but knows Canadian rock music like no one else. Unlike his roommate, Hal, Nick has zero luck with ladies, which is a pity, because deep-down, he's an old-fashioned romantic." (Side note: in the "Sweet City Woman" episode, Nick says that he was born in 1978, which puts him at age 27, not 28.)

The first episode to feature Nick as a main character was "Sweet City Woman", which first aired on Friday July 1st at 10:30pm. A viewers' discretion notice appeared before the show started, stating that the program contains some nudity. To the dismay of some, however, Fred does not do as one of the male actors did in the previous episode, which is to bare his bottom, although he does appear in boxers and his bare chest makes a brief appearance.

The episode is about Nick's brief love affair with an older, married woman and the effect this ends up having on his constipated bowels. I found the episode overall really enjoyable, but I found the second half to be a little on the unbelievable side. I find it difficult to believe that Nick would go marching uninvited into a party being hosted by the married woman with whom he had a secret affair and kiss her, in front of her husband no less. To me, this just didn't fit Nick's character, but it was still cute to watch. Fred has a real knack for playing kind, unassuming characters, and there's a wonderful, endearing quality to the tone of his voice that makes you want to give him a big hug and tell him just how darn cute he is.

Here's a preview of scenes in other episodes featuring Fred:
