November 8th, 2003 Total Lunar Eclipse

Chapters/Regent Mall Public Observing

On November 8th members of the William Brydone Jack Astronomy Club and Leo Hayes High School Astronomy Club held a public viewing session outside the front doors of Chapters at the Regent Mall from 7:30pm to 10:00pm. This mid evening on a saturday night proved to be great timing as more than 300 people stopped by to view and talk about the lunar eclipse. Some 150 remained outside during the half hour of totality even with the very cold weather.

Two employees of the Daily Gleaner covered the event well taking pictures and interviewing members. The monday newspaper saw our club get a front page story and photo with the headlines,"Eclipse Mania Hits City!" There were 5 telescopes of varying sizes on hand for anyone to view through including the 10" made by the Leo Hayes Highschool Astronomy Club. The event was very successful and popular! Thanks to all those that helped out!

Below is a picture of the telescopes set up in front of the mall as the event Was just getting started.

A very crude picture taken by Paul Gray of the eclipse through his telescope by simply holding his digital camera at the eyepiece!
