Thoughts on Episode 6 and Outlook for Episode 7

Thoughts on Episode Six

Start -- No Airport Shuffle

Teams were instructed to fly to Jaipur, India through Moscow. Teams wound up connecting through Moscow and New Delhi, India. All teams took a 5:40 AM flight from New Delhi to Jaipur, India. Once teams reached Jaipur, they had to race by taxi to the remote outskirts of Dhula Village to find a man seated under a holy fig tree. Mel and Mike had trouble as their driver held their luggage in his trunk while he got directions from another driver, not allowing them to switch cabs. Christie and Jodi wished for a "hurry button" when their driver stopped for fuel. The flight attendants fell quite a way behind.

Route Info

Once teams reached Dhula village and found the large tree and the man seated there, they were surprised to not find the usual cluebox. Instead, at the table, there were a couple of red phones. Curious Racers, some sooner, some later, would look closer at the phones and see the instructions. Interestingly, the flight attendants were the least confused, perhaps familiar with red phones. From the website: They were to call one of four phone numbers for their next clue. Eventually, teams found they would now be heading to the Amber Fort.

Few if any teams fully understood the recorded message, as it distractingly mentioned the parking at the Amber Fort. Wisely, Tammy and Victor had their taxi driver listen to the message and explain it to them.

Roadblock

From the website: One team member had to choose a group of camels and, using a set of traditional tools, load and carry enough food and water to satisfy each of the camels in the group. Once the pile of food reached the designated line and the water spilled over out of the trough, teams would receive their next clue.

Four team members performing the Roadblock were confused as to the traditional tools: Mark, Jaime, Margie, and Kisha. This allowed the long-delayed flight attendants time to catch up.

Result

Cara and Jaime Jaime She used the bucket for most of the feed and had to redo a lot. She worked quickly to finish third.
Christie and Jodi Jodi Last to arrive, just as Tammy and Victor were leaving, and hoped to gain time. She still finished after the rest of the teams. But, she did gain time as she got the clue right and used the basket for the feed.
Kisha and Jen Kisha She used the bucket for almost all the feed and had to redo a lot.
Margie and Luke Margie She used the bucket for most all the feed and had to redo a lot.
Mark and Michael Mark Mark was not shown on the split screen, but he fell from second to sixth, as he also used the bucket for most all the feed.
Mel and Mike Mel Mel looked like he could hardly go another step, but gritted his way through very well indeed! Finished second.
Tammy and Victor Victor Tammy asked if bucket was the right tool for the feed. Victor saw the baskets by the feed along with the rake and realized she was right, the basket was a better tool. He worked quickly to maintain his lead. As they were leaving, Tammy took quite a stumble on some uneven ground.

Following the Roadblock, teams learned they were headed back to Jaipur, to Johri Bazar and had to find a Rajasthani puppet store at shop number 131.

Speed Bump

From the website: Using colored paint Christie and Jodi had to decorate an elephant, an Indian tradition as it would be for a festival.

They did this quickly enough to rejoin some teams at the Detour. They felt proud of their work.

Detour

Movers From the website: Teams had to travel to the Sanganeri Gate where they needed to choose a cycle rickshaw loaded high with barrels. Then, they had to transport the barrels by pedaling one and a half miles through the congested streets of Jaipur to Zorawar Singh Gate and search through their containers for a small metal elephant that they could exchange for their next clue.

The key was to read the clue and realize that it was not the moving that would be hard, but the time-consuming search for the small metal elephant.

Shakers From the website: Teams had to travel to a nearby busy intersection, put on traditional costumes and makeup, and join a Rajasthani dance troop. Then, they had to go out in the streets and shake their hips for tips. After earning 100 rupees, they would receive their next clue.

Teams had too much fun with this one. It proved to be far the easier side of the Detour.

Notes

Cara and Jaime Shakers They had so much fun! The bad part was not finding their taxi driver for some 20 minutes. They caught a huge break when Margie and Luke waited for them to spot their taxi driver.
Christie and Jodi Shakers They enjoyed it! They gained on Mark and Michael, not leaving in last place.
Kisha and Jen Shakers Even though they were nearly the last to arrive, they had fun!
Margie and Luke Shakers Did OK with it, although Luke struggled with dancing. He had to use visual cues to mimic the dance. Then they waited, perhaps just a few minutes, for Cara and Jaime to find their taxi driver.
Mark and Michael Movers Oops! They fell into the trap of thinking this was up their alley. The search took so long they were nearly eliminated, putting them in last place by the time they finished. They had actually gotten all the straw out of the 9 containers, and had to reach inside some of them to finally find the metal elephant.
Mel and Mike Shakers They had a lot of fun! They were genuinely surprised that these poor people were so generous.
Tammy and Victor Shakers They had fun with it! Even Victor loosened up and enjoyed this one.

Place

Cara and Jaime 5
Christie and Jodi 7
Kisha and Jen 3
Margie and Luke 4
Mark and Michael 6
Mel and Mike 2
Tammy and Victor 1

The fourth place team, Margie and Luke, arrived just seconds behind the third place team, Kisha and Jen. The fifth place team, Jaime and Cara, were also just seconds behind. As Phil said, Mark and Michael cut it awfully close, perhaps a minute ahead of the last place team, Christie and Jodi, only because the stuntmen won the taxi race.

Outlook for Episode Seven

The six remaining teams have diverse backgrounds and relationships. The surprise this edition is how even the teams are. Each team has strengths and weaknesses, and unique character. This edition is fun to watch!

Kisha and Jen recovered from a bad performance at the Roadblock, but the stuntmen fell far behind. Tammy and Victor got all the way back to their winning combination. Margie's mistake the Roadblock caused them to drop back to fourth. Mel and Mike put in a solid performance, thanks to Mel's excellent, gritty effort in the Roadblock. Jaime and Cara did OK after their stumble in the Roadblock and their leisurely taxi driver at the Detour. While it would appear that the stronger teams are Tammy and Victor, Margie and Luke, and Mel and Mike, the latter two teams are shown struggling in the preview.

Will Tammy's stumble leaving the Roadblock affect her? How will Margie do after fainting? How quickly wIll Mel and Mike find their way? Watch the encounter with animals in hot Thailand in Episode Seven on March 29, 2009 at 8:00 PM, unless delayed by NCAA tournament basketball.
