Thoughts on Episode 4 and Outlook for Episode 5

Thoughts on Episode Four

No Airport Shuffle

All teams take the same very long flight, 6900 miles, from La Paz, Bolivia, to Auckland New Zealand. Ken and Tina are irked that all their advantage is lost. Aja and Ty fight. Part of their problem is exhaustion from the frenetic pace of the Race. The other problem is that they do not know each other very well. They understand the balancing act, but the surprises, like Aja's changing moods and Ty's frustration with her "attitude" get in the way. They escalate to name calling, and they have just wasted valuable down time. Teams realized that the Race restarts with finding the marked cars after landing. Chaos ahead!

Teams were instructed to take marked cars 12 km. to a Pier C of a marina in Gulfport to find the clue hidden in a Gordian knot The clue offers either a Fast Forward or to drive to the top of Mount Eden in Auckland, its highest point. Aja and Ty have flat tire, but Ty had no prior experience with changing a flat. Aja flagged down a Good Samaritan fellow to change the tire in the dark. Marisa and Brooke get lost, do not find Pier C right away, then walk past the knots until one blocks their path. Only then do they realize, "this has to be it".

From the website: This was the first of only two Fast Forwards hidden on the race. The first team that finds it and completes it could skip all tasks and proceed directly to the Pit Stop. In it, teams had to go directly to the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, the Auckland Skytower. Then, using the tower's maintenance ladders, they had to climb from the sky deck to the top and pick up a Travelocity Roaming Gnome.

Ken and ina successfully complete the Fast Forward, in spite of Tina's fear of heights.

Roadblock

Teaser question: Who has an eye for detail?

From the website: From the website: that team member had to choose an image of a traditional tattoo seen on Maori warriors. Then, walking among the Maori, racers had to find the warrior with the tattoo that matched the one they had in hand. If the match was wrong, the warrior would take their image and the racer had to start again.

The rub was to match a two-dimensional picture to a tattooed face. If the racer got it right, he or she might have to perform the Maori greeting before receiving their next clue.

Then teams had to drive back into Auckland to the City Life Hotel and spot a Travelocity Roaming Gnome from the hotel's observation deck and retrieve it. Some teams had trouble spotting a gnome, each in unusual locations. Some teams had trouble finding way to the gnome they had spotted. At least once, two teams traversed the same hallway going for separate gnomes.

Detour

Matter of Time: From the website: teams had to drive to a kiwi orchard where, using their bare feet, they needed to crush enough kiwi fruit to make twelve quarts of juice. When they reached the goal, each team member had to drink a glass of the juice to receive their next clue.

Do the mashed kiwi fruit! Jagged rocks on bottom of stands cut soles of feet. Unlucky teams failed to unclog vat drains and got little or no juice to flow.

Matter of Skill: From the website: teams had to drive to Blokart Heaven, choose two kits and properly assemble a pair of blokarts. Then teams had to sail the blokarts around the track three times to earn their next clue.

Blokart Heaven is located close to the northeast coast of the North Island. Carts were tricky to properly assemble, with knots that had to be set in the correct position. The carts were hard to control--think John Kerry!

No one picked Skill first. To teams that did not unclog the drains, the vats did not appear to drain correctly.

Teams had to find Summerhill Sheep Farm.

Outlook for Episode Five

The remaining teams have diverse backgrounds and relationships. Each of the teams has a unique combination of strengths and weaknesses. Some Racers are not as physically fit as others, and it shows already. Others have quite a bit of intelligence, while others are creative.

Ken and Tina struggled just a bit in the first two legs, but made few mistakes this time around. Toni and Dallas improved their performance this episode, as did Terence and Sarah and Kelly and Christy. The bottom teams of Aja and Ty, and Andrew and Dan might be in trouble. Meanwhile, Terence and Sarah encounter trouble of the legal kind. In this episode, the severity of Starr's injury at the blocart track will be revealed. The last place team could catch a break if this is the first non-elimination leg.

Watch episode five on October 26th, at 8:00 PM Eastern/Pacific, unless delayed by NFL football.
