CBS' The Amazing Race 13th Edition

Thoughts on Episode 1 and Outlook for Episode 2

Thoughts on Episode One -- GO!

Airport Shuffle

Episode One was a multiple day leg. Teams left the LA Coliseum to find out that they needed to depart from LA International Airport (LAX). Getting to Brazil took awhile. Teams were to take one of two flights specified the initial clue -- American flight 252 or United flight 843. The American flight was scheduled to arrive 3 hours ahead of the United flight. Thus teams scrambled to find the American counter witth the tickets, only to find that it was not in the area the shuttles dropped them off, but in another area. The mad dash benifited one team, Terence and Sarah, that had mistakenly taken surface streets to LAX. The teams that had to take the United flight still arrived in Salvador, Brazil, an hour and a half later, putting those five teams at a disadvantage.

Pushcarts

One team member had to push a cart loaded with snacks through crowded streets, then up a funicular to the upper section of the city to Praca da Se, where they needed to find Indio.

Detour

Hard Way Up: From the website: Teams made their way to the staircase of a nearby cathedral called Escadaria do Passo where, knowing they would be asked a mystery question, they had climb the stone staircase on their hands and knees as locals do for a spiritual pledge. At the top, they'll be asked the mystery question to earn their next clue. If they're wrong, they had to climb the stairs again.

The mystery question: How many steps did they climb?

Soft Way Down: From the website: Teams made their way to an outdoor elevator known as Elevador Lacerda and climb down a cargo net to the street 240-feet below.

Teams found Soft Way Down to be scary, but easy enough. Andrew and Dan found Hard Way Up to be harder than expected, since they had to climb the steps all over again.

Outlook for Episode Two

The ten teams have diverse backgrounds and relationships. Each of the teams has a unique combination of strengths and weaknesses. Some Racers are not as physically fit as others, and it shows already. Others have quite a bit of intelligence, while others are creative.

Nick and Starr had few mistakes throughout nearly two days of competition. Ken and Tina struggled just a bit in the pushcart activity, but made few other mistakes. These two teams appear tough to beat. The bottom teams of Anthony and Stephanie and Marissa and Brooke are in trouble. The next two teams above them, Andrew and Dan and Aja and Ty are also vulnerable.

:

Watch episode two on October 5th, at 8:00 PM, unless delayed by NFL football.
