RAG RUG KIT

Rag Rug making was very popular until the late 1950's when interest in recycling declined. Now that recycling is popular again Fred Aldous have brought out this easy to do kit to reuse your old clothes and materials.

This craft is very economical, and is simple to do. The main material used is taken from old clothes. Virtually any fabric can be used, but the thicker it is the better.
Old clothes are simply torn into strips, about an inch wide, which are then cut into lengths of about four to five inches using the Rag Rug Gauge.

The strips are then threaded into a hessian backcloth using the rag rugger. The point of the rugger is pushed through the hessian backcloth and out again two or three strands away so that the end of a strip of cloth can be placed in the jaw. The rugger is then pulled back to thread the strip, which is released halfway through, leaving roughly equal length ends on the top side.

There is no need to knot the strip as it's own thickness, and the nearness of its neighbours, are enough to keep it in place. Each strip should be threaded four or five strands of hessian away from it's neighbours on all sides. This produces a rug with a very deep pile that will last for years.

The edges of the backcloth should be turned under and either tacked to the back of the rug when finished or taken up when threading the strips.

Patterns can be drawn on the backcloth to be followed with different colours of cloth strip, or picking various colours at random can produce a very attractive rug.
