How to Dye Dried Grasses, Live Flowers and Feathers.

DRIED GRASSES
Dried grasses dyed to bright colours can make very attractive table decorations or can be used simply to brighten up the home. This can be achieved by using Dylon Multi-Purpose Dye in the following way :

  1. The quantity of dye used will depend on the depth of colour required. The shades obtained will be paler than when treating fabric.
  2. Very hot water should be used in the dyebath adding the Multi-Purpose dye, which has first been dissolved in boiling water.
  3. Wet the grasses completely. Hold the stems in one hand and dip the tops into the dye solution moving them around very gently.
  4. Remove from the dyebath when the required shade is obtained.
  5. Rinse very carefully and dry. During the drying process "tap" the grasses very gently to separate.

LIVE FLOWERS
Many white or pale coloured flowers, like Carnations or Marguerites, can be dyed to unusual colours by allowing the flowers to "drink" the dye. Dylon Cold Dye should be used in the following way :

  1. Dissolve the dye in warm water and add two teaspoons of glycerine to each tin of dye.
  2. Allow the solution to cool then place the flower stems in the dye.
  3. The colour will begin to appear after about an hour but the final depth of shade will depend on the length of time that the flowers are left in the dye.
  4. When the desired colour has been achieved, the flowers can be transferred to a vase or bowl.

FEATHERS

  1. The contents of one tin of Dylon Multi-Purpose Dye should be thoroughly dissolved in a pint of boiling water and added to the dyebath, which contains one gallon of warm water. Add one pint of WHITE vinegar. These proportions relate to 8 oz dry weight of feathers.
  2. The feathers should be washed in a good soapy solution, rinsed thoroughly and then immersed in the dyebath soaking wet. Raise the temperature of the dyebath to 90ºC and maintain at this temperature for ten minutes only. Move the feathers around constantly.
  3. Rinse the feathers until the water runs clear and dry in the normal way. Feathers are very fragile and should be treated with care throughout the entire process.
