Fred in New Years Honours List

Fred's secret fight against cancer

Fred in New Years Honours List

Fred has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list for services to heritage and broadcasting.

The 65-year-old from Bolton, Greater Manchester, pledged to buy a new flat cap for his trip to Buckingham Palace.

And he said he was looking forward to meeting Prince Charles because they "share the same views about modern architecture".

Fred, who is rarely seen without his cap, said: "I'm very proud they've chosen me for an award.

"I'm an old fashioned bloke and it is nice for the old school to get some recognition.

"I don't do what I do for awards - I do it because I love old chimneys and architecture and engineering. But it's still a real thrill to get this.

"I'm looking forward to meeting the Queen but I shall probably have to get a new cap.

Fred's secret fight against cancer

Fred's MBE celebrations have been tinged with secret anguish.

On the day he was named in the New Year Honours list for services to heritage and broadcasting, he revealed that he is suffering from incurable cancer.

"I've got a touch of the big C," said Fred, 65. "I'm not too good at the moment but I'm still here and hopefully I will just keep going."

Fred's cancer was first diagnosed two years ago but he was later given the all-clear. Following a scan six months ago he was told the cancer had returned and spread through his body.

In October, he told the Bolton Evening News he was trying to work through his illness and more than a year ago, he fought back tears as he told the newspaper that he was unwell.

But the Bolton born and bred father of six is now looking forward to meeting the Queen when he travels to Buckingham Palace to receive his MBE later this year.
