*Use: F=Freight, P=Passenger, S=Switching. Uses varied depending on conditions, from one railroad to another, and over time. For example, the PRR used Trainmasters in freight service, but the Reading had some equipped with steam heat for passenger service. This list shows "use" for that model as F/P, but this does not mean that all examples of that locomotive were used for dual service.

Wheel arrangements are shown as follows: the letter "B" is used to denote a 2-axle truck, the letter "C" to denote a 3-axle truck with all axles powered, the designation "A1A" is used to denote a 3-axle truck in which the center axle is not powered, and numbers are used to denote the number of unpowered axles in a truck. Dashes are used to separate between trucks and equal signs (=) are used to designate semi-permanent drawbars used between locomotive units not normally separated outside maintenance shops. Dates in parentheses in the railroad company columns show the years that that railroad acquired a particular model of locomotive. Dates given in the last column are the dates that both first acquired that model of locomotive. Some engines had changes of class designation, some had changes in horsepower ratings with or without a change of class designation, and some older passenger locomotives were re-geared for freight service. This list is not intended to be a complete history of all these locomotives, but only a summary. For further information, see the references listed below.
