| Investigation: Research was a major part of developing the power point presentation for this assignment. The main website I visited was, http://www.google.com/negrospirituals. The key words I used for research were Negro Spirituals, Antebellum South, Slavery, Slave Work Songs, and Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Each of these words led to numerous links, one of which was the official site for African American History. This site produced an extensive list of titles of spirituals sang by slaves as well as a list of modern singing artists who have helped keep the songs alive. But the most important aspect of the research revealed that these spirituals have a place in American history, American literature, and great American music. One final note on the research is that Jazz which was birthed in the Harlem Renaissance, has its roots in the slave songs/spirituals. | ||||||||||||||||
| Engagement: The power point presentation takes the viewer through a mini-history lesson that helps him/her (in this case, my students) learn about how slaves dealt with their daily bondage. Thus this evidence is found in the presentation itself. Linking it to this website required a lot of creative thinking. | ||||||||||||||||
| Reflections: Power point presentations are a powerful tool for the classroom. However, the greatest aspect of this tool is that students can use it to develop their own projects and lessons which will provide them with the chance to build on what they already know by researching their subject and then creativily developing a presentation using power point. This again fits into the constructivist classroom because students are engaged in authentic learning, they are building on what they already know, i.e., subject under investigation, keyboarding skills, and they are accessing critical thinking skills as they design, develop and publish their work. This assignment has helped me understand how limited education is without the use of technology. Ideas and lessons have already developed out of this assignment; the best one I think, is to allow students to develop their own lesson using the technology available to them. | ||||||||||||||||
| What I want to learn from this task? (How to enhance student learning through the use of technologyl) I want to learn how to use technology to enhance language arts content in a visual form that will attract student interest in both the content and technology. How I plan to learn this skill? (Practice using the power point presentation tools) I will research Negro spirituals on the internet for historical facts and interesting information that students will be interested in, i.e., famous modern singing artists who still perform spirituals in concerts. Then I will develop a slide show using the information I have gathered. I will include thought-provoking questions to get students to think critically about the inclusion of spirituals in American literature. I will also practice timing the presentation as well as experiment with various fade-in/fade-out formats to find one that is suitable for this presentation. I will practice the presentation and then will link it to my website so that others can see what I have learned and how I put it together. |

| Criteria for grading this assignment The following criteria should be used for grading this assignment. 1. Does this task demonstrate research skills as well as a minimum ability to put a slide presentation together so that the actual lesson will enhance student learning in a high school classroom? 2. Does the evidence page contain all the requirements of the assignment? 3. Does the power point presentation make sense; is it clear and easy to understand and do the photos add visual interest to the presentation? 4. Does the link from the index page to the evidence page work? Does the link from the evidence page to the power point presentation work? If the criteria above are met, the grade should be a 10. The grade should reflect not just the level of skills, but also the research involved in putting together the facts for the presentation. |
