Amara's entire adolescent life was spent on an island (Nova Roma) that was
completely hidden from the rest of the world. As time and technology moved
forward, her homeland did not. She is still learning to understand present-day
technology (i.e. electricity, cars, computers, etc...). She was the only
daughter to the King of Nova Roma, and at times acts like a little princess.
Amara will often cover her lack of understanding with a bitchy "better than
thou" attitude, but she is truly a very good person

History: In the First Century B.C., a large number of Roman citizens feared that
their republican government
might be replaced with an imperial one. They journeyed to South America, and
eventually built a city in the jungle
near the Amazon River, Nova Roma. The original colonists of Nova Roma
intermarried with a group of Incan
Indians that were fleeing Spanish invaders. Then, in the Twentieth Century A.D.,
a faction rose among the people
of Nova Roma, that wished to change the government into a monarchy based on the
ancient Incan government.
Senator Aquilla, a member of the plebeian class, was the leader of a faction
opposed to the imperial faction. Senator Aquilla's wife had disappeared a few
years earlier, leaving him to raise their daughter, Amara. Fearing for her life,
Senator Aquilla sent Amara to live in the jungle outside Nova Roma, disguised as
an Indian. Senator Aquilla feared that a mysterious fire cult and its Black
Priestess wanted to use Amara as a human sacrifice.Amara was captured by the
young hero team New Mutants during their visit to the Amazon jungle. Robert
"Sunspot" Da Costa's mother, an archaeologist, had heard rumors of
Nova Roma, and she wished to find the city. Amara'a disguise was revealed at
about the same time that she and the New Mutants were captured by Nova Roma
soldiers. Amara explained the political situation to the New Mutants, and they
all soon found themselves being used as pawns in the political struggles of the
city.
Amara and Dani Moonstar (then known as Mirage) found themselves in the clutches
of the Fire Cult and its Black Priestess. The Black Priestess turned out to be
Selene (the villainess later known as the Black Queen), the wife of Senator
Domitus Gallio, leader of the imperial faction. Amara and Dani soon found out
that Selene was a mutant and a psychic vampire, and that she had killed Amara's
mother years earlier. Dani tried to attack Selene mentally, but Selene easily
bested her and threw Amara into a sacrificial lava pit. The immersion somehow
awoke Amara's latent mutant powers. Amara rose out of the pit and attacked
Selene before she could throw Dani in. Amara and the New Mutants were able to
defeat Selene and her husband's imperial faction. Selene disappeared, showing up
later in New York City and joining the world-dominating Hellfire Club.Senator
Aquilla felt that it was time that Nova Roma learned more about modern society.
He ordered Amara to go with the New Mutants, so that she could learn more about
modern civilization and also so that she could learn how to control her powers
from the New Mutant's mentor Professor X. She agreed and joined the New Mutants
and Xavier's School for Gifted Children. She adventured with them for a long
tenure, and even met the Roman god Hercules, a highlight of her experience.
Later, the New Mutants gained a new mentor, the X-men's enemy Magneto, who
agreed to Magma's request to to be transferred to Emma Frost's Massachusetts
Academy. Her request was based on her crush on the mutant known as Empath, a
member of the Hellions which operated out of the Massachusetts Academy. A few
months later, Amara received a letter from her father. He ordered her home to
meet with a Prince that he had arranged for her to marry. Hellion member Empath
accompanied her on the flight to Nova Roma. During the flight there was a bad
storm and the plane crashed in a swamp.
Amara and Empath found themselves being drawn closer together during their trek
through the wilderness, without Empath even having to use his powers. Amara was
wounded while saving Empath from a jaguar. He soon realized that Amara hoped
that they would not be found by her father, because of the marriage plans her
father had in store for her. Empath, knowing her wound was getting infected,
used his powers to upset her so that she caused an earth tremor and raised a
small volcano. A few days later, they were found by her father, who had located
them due to her earth tremors. Soon after, while Amara and Empath were still in
Nova Roma, Amara was captured by agents of the criminal geneticist High
Evolutionary. The agents teleported her to a secret base, planning to remove her
powers permanently. Emma Frost called Magneto and told him about the kidnapping.
The New Mutants overheard Magneto talking about Amara's kidnapping and that they
had located the base where Amara was being kept. The New Mutants teleported to
the base before Magneto and the others, hoping to rescue Amara themselves. They
arrived in time to rescue Amara before her powers were taken from her, and they
then defeated the High Evolutionary's agents. When Magneto and the Hellfire Club
arrived, the New Mutants and Amara teleported back to their school in New York,
fearful of
being discovered. Before escaping, they overheard Magneto mention some special
plans he and the Hellfire Club had for Amara. The New Mutants begged Amara to
stay with them, but she gently refused. She knew that she had to face her father
and deal with the plans he had made for her. She also felt that she would be
safer in Nova Roma, away from Magneto and the other Hellfire Club members and
their plans for her.
Many months later, the Hellions were viciously killed by the time-traveling
villain Trevor Fitzroy. Former Hellions and New Mutants (Firestar, Warpath, and
Cannonball) traveled to Nova Roma to give Amara and Empath the news. They
uncovered Empath's mental control over the population, due to his revelation
that the entire town was in fact all a lie created by Selene. Selene had
kidnapped and brainwashed several native South Americans and tourists in order
to create the elaborate community with her as its goddess. Empath revealed that
Amara's true name was Allison Crestmere, the daughter of a British ambassador.
Magma and Empath agreed to stay in Nova Roma and help its people adjust to life
in the 20th Century.Later still, both Magma and Empath were kindapped by the
mutant twins Fenris, a plot that was part of an elborate and deadly game
organized by the villainous Gamesmaster. They were rescued by the team X-Force
(formerly, the New Mutants). Afterwards, Magma decided to leave Empath and her
friends, to search for her family in England. More recently, Magma was mentally
dominated to join the New Hellions by the villain King Bedlam. King Bedlam
unleashed the Armageddon Man, and Magma teamed up with X-Force to defeat him,
after which she departed from her friends again.
