BLAIR WITCH PROJECT:
INTIAL REVIEW

As you know, I always give the film I review a silly title followed by the actual title.

But not for this film.

I also fill my reviews with sarcasm in hopes that you'll actually read the entire, idiotic review.

But not for this film.

Why not?

Because if you see this film, you better be prepared to be frightened in a way you haven't experienced before. I'm not saying that this is the 'scariest' film ever made.

What it IS is the most creative and original genre film to come out in a very long time. In fact, it is so original that I guarantee there will be imitators soon to follow.

As you know, the horror market has become flooded with sequels and f/x diluted remakes in the last several years. And although "Scream" seemed to revive the genre somewhat, it was simply a 'Friday the 13th'/ 'Halloween' imitator for the Generation-X.

Well, there is now a new kid in town….and it's pretty f*cking creepy.

Your story is this: 3 college students venture into the forest of the small town to film a documentary on the legend of the Blair Witch, a legend which dealt with witchcraft and the violent murders of children within the forest.

Sounds pretty normal so far, eh?

Well, I suppose the subject of witchcraft isn't all that scary, especially with our latest installments (The Craft, Little Witches).

And I suppose a lot of us wouldn't consider the forest creepy, but instead as a camping spot during the summer.

I agree.

But what if the entire film was shown through the eyes of the students' shaky 16mm camera….and camcorder?

And what if they did their hiking/filming during the daylight hours…..and found physical evidence of strange doings/witchcraft, got lost, ran out of food, began arguing and seemed to be hiking in circles despite following a trusted compass?

And because of this confusion, they had to spend more nights in that forest than they had planned, which isn't a big deal…..except for the noises and children laughter they hear outside the tent at night.

Sound creepy yet?

Now, remember, you're seeing what happens through the eyes of the 16mm and camcorder which means that the pictures are shaky, erratic, and in the dark.

You are at the mercy of their cameras, and when a person is terrified by what they hear or see, they aren't thinking about getting a close up on it, they're thinking

RUN!

Have you seen the trailer for it yet?

You may recall it showing one scene…..a girl sitting in the dark, crying and terrified and talking to a camera. And all she says is that

'she's so sorry, she loves her mom and dad, and she's so scared'.

Well, I don't know about you, but that preview creeped me out.

Just wait til you see the film.

Now, I am going to stop here because I want you to see this film, and then I will do a more detailed, follow up review because I have a lot to comment on but it must wait til the public has a chance to experience it.

Just remember the advertising:

"In October of 1994, 3 student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkettsviile, MD while shooting a documentary.

A year later, their footage was found."

Prepare yourself.
