| Spidey-mania comes to PS2 Okay who here guessed that one of the hottest movies of the summer wouldnt have a video game based on it? All of you people who said I did are horribly mislead. Following the tradition of games based on movies like Titanic and Independence Day there is a game based on the hot motion picture Spider-man. However for the first time since the days of the old 8-bit Nintendo this movie-based game is actually good. For those of you who havent seen the web slingers first big budget adventure on screen, this game follows Spider-man as he attempts to prevail over the Green Goblin. The thing is that the story behind the game and the story behind the movie are surprisingly different. The main reason they made the story of the game different was because a Spider-man game with only one super-villain just wouldnt be fun. So they expanded on the story in order to provide more baddies. So for those of you who were hoping to just play the game and find out what happens in the movie, youre out of luck. The game design giant Activision, the good people responsible for the first two fantastic Spider-man games on PS1, has done a fantastic job of taking the web-head to the new generation of systems. I mean its always going to be a Playstation game, but if youre not fortunate to have access to a PS2 you can always play it on the X-box and the Gamecube. The game itself is beautifully put together, the metallic webs on Spider-mans costume actually shimmer in the light, thats how detailed the game is. Tobey McGuire and the rest of the cast actually provide voice-overs for their characters in the game, which reminds me, Kirsten Dunst butchered Mary Jane Watson, she was awesome when she was 10 in Interview with a vampire (which by the way, did have a game based on it), however her recent strain of cheerleading movies to now being in Spider-man have not improved her insincere childlike acting ability very much. That being said, I feel better. The best new feature of this game is the aerial movements. You can actually control height and direction of web-slinging, not to mention that now there are awesome aerial battles between Spider-man and his bad guys. The space Ive been given just isnt enough to cover all of the awesome things in this game, however when you win the game in hard mode you do get the best surprise ever put in as an unlockable feature in a game. I wont spoil it for you, but youll love it. Oh and one more thing, you are guided through the game by the voice of Bruce Campbell himself. Lets talk about mistakes that were made. There are alternate costumes for Spidey to wear through the game once you unlock them, but there arent enough. There were tons of them in Spider-man 2: Enter Electro, but there are only like 4 of them in this game and none of them are from the comics. Another bad thing is that Kirsten Dunst does an even less believable Mary Jane when its just a character in a game. This game is easily the best game of the Spider-man series. Which is quite the compliment considering that the original Spider-man was voted the best superhero game ever. Hopefully that means that well have a new reigning champion of superhero games for a little while. This game is so much fun that I could play it forever so I recommend that you buy this game, because its just that awesome. Back |
