In 2002 the nobel prize for chemistry was awarded to Alan J Heeger, Alan G MacDiarmid and Hideki Shirakawa for the discovery and development of conductive polymers. However there is some controversy over this award due to the question of whether this group were actually the first to discover conductive polymers. Another group, McGinness, Corry and Proctor, had published a paper in 1974 reporting similar results about the bistable switching properties of melanin. This paper was earlier then that published in 1977 by Shirakawa et al so there is doubt as to whether the prize was awarded accordingly. |
