1) He is close to completing his PhD fellowship with a morphological, biochemical and molecular study on the South-European species of the genus Isotomurus (Börner 1903) (Collembola: Isotomidae). His focus is the systematic relationships among South-European populations of the Isotomurus genus. He is interested in the study of intra\interspecific systematic relationships among Collembola; especially from a molecular point of view and is dealing with the problem of the "ambiguous" systematic structure of the Isotomurus palustris group of species. He hopes to achieve a phylogenetic reconstruction of the "group" using genetic markers such as mitochondrial DNA sequences and allozyme electrophoresis, coupled with an accurate morphological analysis.
2) He is involved in a project on Collembola from Antarctica. The project looks at interspecific genetic variation of Gressittachanta terranovae (and later other species) and phylogenetic relationships between Antarctic and subantarctic species to infer possible routes of colonization of the Antarctic Continent.
3) The origin of the Apterygota. Specifically, the application of the genetic markers (amplification and sequencing of nuclear genes) for the investigation of the phylogenetic relationships among the Apterygotan orders. He hopes to increase the ammount of information available in order to clarify the systematic relationships among the orders of Apterygota and hopefully provide the first steps of the evolutionary project of hexapods. Further details can be obtained from him.

Interests: He has been doing behavior and ecology of macroinvertebrates for most of his career. He has done only as much keying and identification as he had to, as this is not his strong point. Recently, he has become involved in a study of ant and spider relationships in floodplain forest near New Orleans. They clearly use the same food resources, namely Collembola. He has sampled Collembola through pitfalls and litter extraction in Berlese/Tulgren funnels, and can at least identify them to family. However, he would now like to switch his focus to the Collembola, because he has been surprised at how the species vary among substrates on a small spatial scale, and he would like to know much more about them. Is there someone on the list who would be willing to help him identify the important species in the samples? More importantly, can someone help him learn to prepare and key them himself? He has got Hopkin's book and has looked at Christianson's 4-volume key, but he thinks this may be more challenging than previous keying he has done on macroinverts. Advice will be gratefully accepted from any and all and will be acknowledged on any publications that might eventually come of this study.

Interests: I am a student at McGill University's Department of Biology. I have an interest in Collembola. I was recommended to join the Collembola group by Dr. Chagnon of UQAM, who did her PhD on Quebec Collembola, and has advised me on my current research.
I have worked on Collembola identification in Hawaii in 2007, where my lab was studying the effects of feral pigs on the soil by identifying Collembola associated with pig disturbed vs. pig undisturbed soil.
Currently, I have a renewed interest in Collembola; however, this time I will be looking at Quebecois Collembola under my superisor Dr. Martin Lechowicz. For my senior honors project I decided to study changes in Collembola community composition and species abundance in response to forest fire. The study site is located at Mont St-Hilaire, Quebec. There was a fire there in April, so I will be sampling soil and leaf litter from severe, moderate, and lightly burned transects.
I will be identifying Collembola to species level.

Interests: I am the head of a working group on soil zoology since 1986. We are working mainly in the agro-ecosystem about the impact of agricultural management. The ecological conditions of Collembola under various amount of fertilizers, pesticides or sewage sludge, the influence of soil compaction, conventional and conservation tillage and the spatial distribution of Collembola are some topics. To measure the soil biological activity, including that of Collembola, we use bait lamina (after von Törne) and minicontainer (after Eisenbeis). Beside research in the field we work in the laboratory about aspects of collembolan biology like food preference and interactions with other soil organisms. Furtheron we are involved in the development of test methods using Collembola as monitor organisms e.g. for heavy metals

Interests:Is a Research Officer with the Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Rainforest Ecology and Management (CRC-TREM). His major role there is the day to day management of a new research facility that may interest some of you. They have recently erected a tower crane in an area of tropical lowland rainforest at Cape Tribulation in far North Queensland, Australia (around
120km to the north of Cairns). This facility allows researchers to gain access to virtually the entire rainforest canopy within an area of approximately 1 hectare. The crane tower is 50 metres high and the jib (horizontal boom on top of the tower) is 55m in length. The jib rotates around 360 degrees thus giving access to a 0.95 hectare area. A small 3 person gondola is suspended from the jib and can be raised and lowered to any point within the area below the jib. They have almost completed a vegetation survey of the site and will have a vegetation map available soon. Other current research projects include studies of vertical and horizontal variation in microclimate, herbivory, and arthropods associated with the flowers of various canopy tree species. I have started a survey of the soil arthropods and hope to soon begin looking at the distribution and behaviour of Collembola in the canopy. Much of my time however is absorbed with trivia such as ensuring we have reliable supplies of diesel for the generator, getting the road graded periodically, trying to establish a reasonable set of buildings on the site e.g. accomodation lab etc, etc. As you can see, I will certainly not have the time to monopolise collembolan studies on the site myself. In fact I would welcome a visit from any of you. Keep in mind though that there is a charge associated with using the crane. This is currently set at $50.00 (Australian) per hour. (Visiting the site and working on the forest floor are of course free). If any of you are interested in using or visiting the site please let me know and I will provide more detailed information.

SNIDER, RICHARD AND RENATE
Mailing address:
Richard Snider
Dept. of Zoology
Michigan State University
E. Lansing, MI 48824 USA
Interests:
1) They have completed 12 years of research on the ELF effect on soil fauna. A number of papers have been produced and there are more still to come. they do have a checklist published for the Collembola and anyone who desires the same should contact Richard.
2) They are working on the Collembola of Bermuda. Kevin Monkman on Bermuda is collecting some sites the Sniders could not get to back in the 80's. The list grows longer. Surprisingly, the Bermuda fauna is not large. It has a mixture of American and European species and a couple new species. Kevin is going to collect the sea wrack for them and they may get some new records for semiaquatic species.
3) They has a large number of new species of Sminthurus to get out. The collections they made 2 years ago in the Great Smoky Mountains yielded up a new species of Orchesella, among other things. Much of this material is half described and illustrated. The current effort is in Dicyrtomidae. They have com piled a list of North and South American species. It numbers 72 species. Half of these are undescribed. Collections sent by Don Chandler (New Hampshire) contain a number of new species. So the list should be
75+. They have found that there may be a large complex of Ptenothrix "marmorata" species and "marmorata" look-alikes. If this is true, then most records for that species are in doubt.
4) They also would like to solve the mystery of Papiroides. Is it valid? The distribution of the various dicyrtomid genera is interesting and they are in the process of mapping the species.
5) Any work that concerns breakdown of woody plant material.
6) Identification of the Collembola for the Florida State Collection of Arthropods.
7) The Savannah River Site project continues to rumble along. This is a huge work of over 300 species that will have keys, drawings, comparisons, and habitat descriptions aimed at the field ecologist that hates doing collembolan identifications because it takes so long. They plan dorsal and lateral habitus drawings for each species. Also species reconstructions of microhabitats from various collection sites. Thus it will be possible to show differences between such difficult genera as Lepidocyrtus and Pseudosinella in a plate of side by side illustrations. The same may be true for those small species of isotomid look alikes.
8) Along with Dr. Alvin J. M. Smucker they have submitted a proposal to NSF that takes a look at the relation of Collembola to roots in various field crop species.
9) A second proposal is in preparation. Until some grant money comes in, they are not taking any new students, at any level. They are interested in seeing specimens of Sminthurus, Dicyrtomidae, and Bourletiellidae.
