Franky's
2003 Oscar Predictions
Before I make my picks and what I believe Oscar will pick, I just want to state that I haven't seen all of the films yet. Including: The Pianist, The Quiet American, Far from Heaven, and Hable Con Ella. Therefore, my picks won't include them.
How this site is broken down:
MY PICK: what I believe is best
OSCAR'S PICK: what I believe Oscar will pick
TRUE OSCAR'S PICK: what the real pick is (available after Oscars)
Best Picture
Nominees:
MY PICK: 1) Adaptation (Charlie Kaufman writes a movie about himself writing the movie that we are watching) 2) The Hours ("live your life so that you are happy no matter what the consequences are;" while Virginia Woolf writes her book under emotional confusion, we witness a futuristic idea of that which she is writing; this is very close to being just as good, if not better, than Adaptation) 3) Catch Me If You Can (very fun, happy and all around good picture) 4) Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (more action than the first one, however after watching this one I appreciate the first one more because of its great characterization, therefore I feel the first one is better, but I feel this one more captures the people's liking. The last hour is the most entertaining hour I've ever seen in a movie)
OSCAR'S PICK: Chicago (only b/c they have been advertising more and it is not as depressing as The Hours)

MY PICK: Extremely hard category: 1) Jack Nicholson (That final scene in this film wins him the award) 2) Nicholas Cage (two personalities in one film is hard to do; he did an outstanding job, but his character is missing that one scene that says "I deserve the award.") 3) Daniel Day Lewis (put on a hell of a performance; a great comeback role)
OSCAR'S PICK: Jack Nicholson (although Daniel Day Lewis is bringing up some talk)

MY PICK: I haven't seen most of these films, but going from what I saw: 1) Diane Lane (hell of a performance; she really has the expressions; her emotional conflict - that scene on the train after having an affair is unbelievable; I wish her the best of luck) 2) Nichole Kidman (but is she really a lead? Her performance is excellent. The scene while waiting for the train will win her the Oscar) 3) Renee Zellweger (the word on the street is that it's between her, Julianne Moore, and Nichole Kidman; however, I saw a great performance by Renee, but not unbelievable)
OSCAR'S PICK: Nichole Kidman (but from what I've been hearing Julianne Moore's performance in Far from Heaven is amazing)
Best
Actor in a Supporting Role

MY PICK: 1) Chris Cooper (we've seen Chris in a lot of movies, but a role like this one shows he can do it all) 2) Ed Harris (he continues to put out excellent work; however, I don't think this is his year but in time I hope he gets his Oscar, which he rightfully deserves) 3) John C. Reilly (Gangs of New York, Chicago, The Hours, The Good Girl, this guy's just everywhere, which shows what a truly talented actor he is and just how many faces he can wear; I wish him the best of luck in his future) NOTE: Christopher Walken is a great actor and I'm a huge fan, and he did do a great job in this film, but he can do amazing things when an even better role comes along and that's when he'll get another Oscar. I'm glad he's nominated.
OSCAR'S PICK: Paul Newman (Political - he's older and on his way out, so they'll give him one last Oscar to show what a truly great career he's had; on the other hand they might give it to Chris Cooper because Paul Newman already received his Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and his Honorary Award; but also instead of Chris Cooper, they may recognize Ed Harris for his great career and past three nominations, if Ed Harris wins it will be because of his past nominations which Chris Cooper has none, but instead Chris Cooper has been in a lot of recognized, great films... This'll be a tough category)
Best Actress in a Supporting Role

MY PICK: 1) Meryl Streep (outstanding performance; the scene when she discovers that Charlie has witnessed her having an affair is amazing - her facial expression and attitude there is so believable that I forgot she was only acting) 2) Julianne Moore (her performance is spectacular in The Hours; I pick Meryl Streep because her performance in Adaptation is great and her performance in The Hours is great; however it would be disheartening if Julianne doesn't come away with an Oscar because she's had such a great year) 3) Catherine Zeta-Jones (great theatrical performance; will Oscar think she too new since this is only her first nomination?) 3) Kathy Bates (fit very well in this role)
OSCAR'S PICK: Meryl Streep (b/c she's been nominated twelve times and only won two, but she deserves it for this role. Or will Julianne Moore get it b/c she may loose the best actress Oscar to Someone else? Or will Catherine Zeta-Jones pull out the win with her exquisite performance? Or will Kathy Bates get it b/c of her notoriety?)
Best Director

MY PICK: 1) Sam Mendes for Road to Perdition (he did an amazing job and it's a sham that he isn't nominated) 2) Other than that, it's a toss up. Scorsese is a mastermind. That shot in Gangs of New York when we see Lewis for the second time is great; it's an upward shot of Lewis from the ground, he's smiling and fire works go off in the sky behind him; very fitting and effective. Rob Marshall did a hell of a job with Chicago though. I need to see the rest of the films to make an final opinion.
OSCAR'S PICK: Martin Scorsese (but does he really deserve it for this film? Could this be political?)

Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen

MY PICK: ----
OSCAR'S PICK: Far From Heaven
Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published
Nominees:
MY PICK: 1) Adaptation. (Charlie Kaufman is a genius when it comes to writing; Being John Malkovich, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind... it's about time he gets acknowledged. Plus, for all you Kaufman fans, I can't wait to see what he does about Donald Kaufman going up on stage if they win) 2) The Hours (I believe this is a better script than Adaptation but I would like to see Adaptation win)
OSCAR'S PICK: The Hours
