Sony PSP

Finally the PSP has been unveiled at E3 2004. After
months of wondering and rumors, we have been
shown a black, sleek, and modern Playstation
Portable. The PSP looks like a Gameboy Advance
in shape, but is about 3 times as powerful.

The PSP itself will have the power of a Playstation
1.5, meaning its better than a Ps1, but not quite a
Ps2, which is very nice. The screen is a little larger
than a GBA's screen, but the pictures quality will be
much better, enough to house games such as Metal
Gear Solid, and Gran Turismo 4. The screen ratio
will be 16:9, meaning that movies won't need to be
changed to fit the PSP, another great add-on.

Anyways, the PSP will use a new media disc, the
UMD(Universal Media Disc). This disc will have
enough storage for long games(Full Fledge Final
Fantasy), full feature length movies, and music.

With all of this media, Sony needed a way to save
it all. They have got it covered with their new
memory card, the Memory Stick Pro Duo. You can
store game saves, video, and music content, on
these sticks that are thinner than a Ps2's memory
card.

Controls on the PSP are much like the Playstation
2's controller, except that the one and only analog
"nub" will be somewhat touch sensitive and won't
have the range of motion a Ps2 analog stick. There
are also two shoulder buttons, L and R, that are
made of a weird clear plastic. All the buttons follow
well with the PSP's sleek, yet functionable design.

Aside from controlling buttons, the usuall buttons
are back, with some new additions. The new
buttons are the home button, screen button for
changing brightness, the audio button for changing
from microphone to headphones, and a different
type of volume control. It's not a slider or even a
scroll, it is a two button adjustment, one for lowder
sound, one for quieter. This way of adjusting
volume is much like a TV, which would be a good
nickname for the PSP, the portable TV, with much
more.

The PSP will definitely be something the mobile
world has never seen, it's also something the
mobile world (i.e., Nintendo) really needed, some
good competition. But with the analog stick,
UMDs, and memory stick, will it be like many other
old Nintendo competetors, way too expensive? It
seems so. If you don't care about price get it, if
$300 is too much though, look at an Xbox first, or
maybe the Nintendo DS. -j0sh
