| "Into the Fire" |
| By Frank Reeve. People in the story; Myself. Location of story;- R.A.F, Camp and Air-field FILTON Bristol. After basic training at Morecambe, I was posted to Filton on ground defence of the Bristol Air-craft works and its ajacent air-field. After a spell of several months of inactivity the Works, Camp and Air-field were subjected to a intense day-light raid by German bombers. A large number of bombs were dropped, many of them with delayed fuses, the intention being to stop or delay the production of the New Bristol Beaufighter, but in less than one hour the craters had been filled in and the unexploded bombs sign-posted and the Emergency Services went into action. The remains of many of the workers cars that had been in the car-park could now been seen hanging in amongst the girders that still remained of what had been a main assembly plant. I don't remember sleeping for the next four days unless it was whilst I was stood up...the rest of the time was spent recording and reporting to Control Room each new exploding bomb...several mates suffered badly damaged ear-drums and were later to be discharged. Myself and others were offered training courses, I asked for re-training as Flight Mechanic and Fitter 1E after which I was posted Haverigg which you can read about in my next story. |
