"After Berlin"
By Frank Reeve

People in story;- Myself
Location of story;- R.A.F; Camp ELVINGTON; Yorkshire

After the twice to Berlin episode several Air-crew members were returned to Non-operational duty. I was lucky enough to be one of them and I was posted to R.A,F; ELVINGTON a few miles out-side York. Here I was put in charge of a team of six Engine fitters with expert knowledge of changing Lancaster Merlin engines. This was on our own air-craft at home  but we had to be mobile to go to any of our Lancasters that had gone down with engine failure at other locations. On many occasions this meant working through the night  and sometimes under tarpaulins to get the Lancaster back on the front line. This posting, nearly the longest in my service history lasted for nearly twenty months and was very rewarding in many ways. I was able to live out in York with my Wife, over looking the Minster from our bed-room and one min walk from the River Ouse.
