Franklin Park predates the establishment of McLean (which will celebrate its 100th next year). While Colonel George Minor and other notables settled the Franklin Park area in pre-revolutionary times it was 100 years ago, in 1909, that Franklin Park was first subdivided into what is now our lovely neighborhood. FACA neighbors are planning a celebration of this historic occasion on May 16th. We plan to gather at the intersection of Virginia Ave. and Nottingham St. at 10 am for a parade which will represent the flight of our 4th President, James Madison, and his wife, Dolley, as they fled from the White House to the protection of Minor's Hill during the British invasion and burning of the capital in 1814. The McLean High School's Project Enlightenment will help us remember those historic times. Following the parade neighbors will celebrate with entertainment and refreshments on Massachusetts Avenue starting at 11 am until 1 pm.
What is the Franklin Area Citizen Association? The Franklin Area Citizen Association is a voluntary assembly of citizens that live in the Briar Ridge, Franklin Cluster, Franklin Park, Little Pimmit Run, Vinson Hall and Wrenwood sections of Fairfax County. Geographically the area is bounded by Arlington County on the south and Kirby Road on the north. The west boundary follows Powhatan Street, but does not include those houses that front on Powhatan, while the eastern boundary bisects the area midway between Old Dominion Road and Chesterbrook Road. The area currently includes about 600 houses and 200 residents of Vinson Hall. The purpose of the Association is to "provide and preserve the general welfare, character and best interests of the community." Toward this end it reviews requests for rezoning and voices any concerns to the County government; disseminates information to the area's citizens through newsletters and brochures and this web site; and encourages contact through meetings and social gatherings. The Association normally holds 2 general meetings a year, a social gathering in the spring and a general membership meeting in the fall. At the fall meeting, a board of directors is elected to oversee Association business. Officials are elected by the Board at its November meeting. The Board, which is comprised of 15 members, meets every 3d Tuesday of the month except in July and December. Whether donating useful remnants from a house |
