"Turn
to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no
other." Isaiah 45:22 (NIV)
"Every
time we say, 'I believe in the Holy Spirit,' we mean that we believe that there
is a living God able and willing to enter human personality and change
it." J. B. Phillips (1906-1982),

Recent
gadfly theories about church council conspiracies that manipulated the New
Testament into existence are bad -- really bad - history (as in The Da Vinci
Code). Read this article at

In his
presidential speeches to evangelical groups, the Great Communicator didn't just
communicate that conservative Christians were important to him and to the
country -- he told them that they were crucial. For example, Reagan's 1983 "evil empire" speech -- one
of the most significant speeches of the 20th century -- was delivered to the
National Association of Evangelicals.
That speech included references to C.S. Lewis's Screwtape Letters,
"a great spiritual awakening in America," America's own "legacy
of evil," school prayer, the Ten Commandments, and this telling litany:
"an overwhelming majority of Americans disapprove of adultery, teenage
sex, pornography, abortion, and hard drugs." (He reiterated many of these themes in other addresses to the
NAE.) But significantly, the speech
began with Reagan telling the Christian leaders how important they were to
him. Read about this at

President
Reagan also spoke out strongly for the importance of Scripture. He declared 1983 the Year of the Bible
during his address at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., on
February 3. Three days earlier, he
addressed a session of the National Religious Broadcasters convention on the
theme of the Bible. His 21-minute
speech was interrupted by applause 15 times.

On the
evening of June 6, 1944, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt addressed
Americans by radio. Seeking to comfort
the nation and ask the blessing of God, President Roosevelt said, "In this
poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer." To hear President Roosevelt's actual prayer
as recorded at that time, go to

Excerpts
from Roosevelt's prayer
"Almighty
God,
Our sons,
pride of our Nation,
This day
have set upon a mighty endeavor;
a struggle
to preserve our republic, our religion,
and our
civilization,
and to set
free a suffering humanity...
"They
fight to end conquest...
They fight
to liberate...
They yearn
but for the end of battle,
for their
return to the haven of home.
"Success
may not come with rushing speed,
but we
shall return again and again;
and we
know by Thy grace, and the righteousness
of our
cause, our sons will triumph.
Thy will
be done, Almighty God, Amen."

People's
choice is dramatically affected by their religious background and
activity. The presidential election in
November is heating up as both major-party candidates have launched national
advertising campaigns, the party conventions are drawing near and political
pundits are increasing their focus on the election. Our latest national survey
finds that among registered voters Democrat John Kerry holds a slim lead over
President Bush -- unless you evaluate the preferences of those who are most
likely to vote. People's choice is
dramatically affected by their religious background and activity, suggesting
that how the candidates appeal to people's faith views may be a deciding factor
in the election. Read the Barna Group's
free report to understand some of the surprising connections between faith and
political choices.

"Fathers
give daughters away to other men who aren't nearly good enough, so they can
have grandchildren who are smarter than anybody else's." Paul Harvey
"When
I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have
the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how
much the old man had learned in seven years." Mark Twain

the baby on the pitcher's mound. Put

ANIMAL
DADS
Catfish: A
father sea catfish keeps the eggs of his young in his mouth until they are
ready to hatch. He will not eat until
his young are born, which may take several weeks.
Duck: Most
male ducks live as bachelors, but the ruddy duck of North America helps care
for his young.
Monkey:
Marmosets are tiny South American monkeys.
The fathers take care of their babies from birth. When the marmoset is born, the father cleans
it, then carries it to the mother only when it needs to be nursed. When the baby can eat solid food, the father
will feed it.
Penguin: A
father Emperor penguin withstands the Antarctic cold for 60 days or more to
protect his eggs, which he keeps on his feet, covered with a feathered
flap. During this entire time he
doesn't eat a thing. Most father
penguins lose about 25 pounds while they wait for their babies to hatch. Afterward, they feed the chicks a special
liquid from their throats. When the
mother penguins return to care for the young, the fathers go to sea to eat and
rest.
Wolf: When
the mother wolf gives birth to pups, the father stands guard outside their den
and brings food to the mother and pups.
As they grow, he not only plays with them but also teaches them how to
survive. Wolves continue to live
together much as human families do.

"Therefore,
since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off
everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race
marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our
faith. For the joy set before him he
endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the
throne of God. Consider him who endured
such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart." Hebrews 12:1-3 (TNIV)
"The
only ultimate disaster that can befall us, I have come to realize, is to feel
ourselves at home here on earth." Malcolm Muggeridge
Words:
Isabel S. Stevenson, 1889.
Music:
Ebenezer Prout, 1887.
Holy Father,
in Thy mercy,
Hear our
anxious prayer.
Keep our
loved ones, now far distant,
'Neath Thy
care.
Jesus,
Savior, let Thy presence
Be their
light and guide;
Keep, oh,
keep them, in their weakness,
At Thy
side.
When in
sorrow, when in danger,
When in
loneliness,
In Thy
love look down and comfort
Their
distress.
May the
joy of Thy salvation
Be their
strength and stay;
May they
love and may they praise Thee
Day by
day.
Holy
Spirit, let Thy teaching
Sanctify
their life;
Send Thy
grace, that they may conquer
In the
strife.
Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit,
God the
One in Three,
Bless
them, guide them, save them, keep them
Near to
Thee.

Now that
spring has sprung and the weather's improving, it's time to move your exercise
routine outdoors. There is no better
way than hiking to get to know your local area while enjoying the fresh air and
fine weather. And if you live in a big
city, hiking can be a great opportunity to get back in touch with nature while
relieving a little stress.
Here are a
few tips for beginner hikers:
*
Start
with a hike no more than two miles round-trip and less than 500 feet in
elevation gain.
*
Pack
plenty of water and bring along a healthy snack (like nuts, natural peanut
butter, and low-fat cheese sticks).
*
Wear
comfortable, terrain-appropriate shoes.
Sneakers typically don't afford enough traction. Hiking shoes or hiking boots are a better
choice.
*
Get a
map of the trail before embarking on your journey. Also, remember to check trail and weather conditions to ensure a
safe trip.
*
Bring
along an emergency kit containing a safety blanket, waterproof matches, and
basic first-aid supplies. Be sure to
remember sunblock and insect repellent.
*
Always
tell someone who's not participating in the hike where you're going. That way, if something happens, there'll be
someone who can help locate you.

Evangelist
Billy Graham was released on June 7, from Mission Hospitals in Asheville,
NC. He had undergone a minimally
invasive procedure there May 20 to stabilize a pelvic fracture he sustained at
home, where he was recovering from a partial hip replacement performed in
January at Mayo Clinic's St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. He will continue intensive physical therapy
at home for at least three months.
"He
has made tremendous progress for a man of his age," said orthopedic
surgeon Daniel Eglinton, M.D, who performed the stabilization surgery with
orthopedic traumatologist C. Michael LeCroy, M.D. "He has had no complications. The pelvis is stable, and it appears as if the surgery has done
what was intended."
"He
is doing very well," added Lucian Rice, MD, Internal Medicine specialist
and long-time physician to the Graham family.
"He still has an extended program of rehabilitation ahead of him,
but he is mentally keen and very determined.
His surgeons have done an excellent job, both in their decision-making
about the best approach to making the repair, and in performing the surgery
itself. His prognosis is good."
"One
of the highlights of my time here in the hospital was to have my wife Ruth come
to see me every day," Graham said before leaving the hospital. "To hold hands with her, and to look
into her eyes after our 60 years of marriage, has been the best medicine I
could have. Ours is a long and
wonderful love story, like that of our friends Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Today I would ask all those who have been
praying for me, and for whose prayers I am so very grateful, to lift up our nation,
our late President, and his wife in her time of mourning."
Rev.
Graham said that he will use the weeks of rehabilitation at home for writing,
and to prepare for preaching opportunities at his next two Crusades, which were
rescheduled following his hospitalization.
New dates are Kansas City Oct. 7-10 and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena Nov.
18-21.

"Prayer
enables us to discover what God is doing, to trace his hand in the
circumstances of our lives. Through the
vital communication of prayer, he transforms us in the process. Prayer, therefore, is not so much a means of
manipulating the master plan, but of being shaped by the master's hand."
Wayne Jacobsen, author
June 20 is
World Refugee Day. Peter Vander Meulen,
the Christian Reformed Church's social justice and hunger concerns coordinator,
suggests it would be "a good time for people concerned for the 'least'
among us to reflect on what's happening to this huge segment of humanity"
and to consider ways to help. He says
current news about the world's refugee situation is mixed: Last year the
refugee population dropped from 12 million to 10 million -- largely due to
Afghan, Sierra Leonean, and Angolan refugees returning home. Resettlement in America is slowly
increasing, with 26,800 refugees resettling in the U.S. last year (down from a
high of 70,000 before 9/11); and more than 10,000 refugees resettled in Canada
last year. But Vander Meulen says these
positive developments "mask the appalling fact that more and more of the
world's refugee population is being 'warehoused' in camps or detention centers
for longer and longer periods of time."
The latest World Refugee Survey reports that more than seven million
refugees have for years been confined to camps or otherwise deprived of basic
rights. Vander Meulen says it is time
to change the way refugees are treated everywhere, and he urges Christians to
pause, particularly on June 20, to "pray, reflect, and resolve to take one
simple action for justice -- in Christ's name."
