THE MISSION OF
THE CHURCH: CHRISTIANITY AS A WORLDVIEW
by Chuck Colson Many evangelicals define faith strictly in
terms of personal salvation. Yet soul-winning is not an end in
itself. We are not only saved from sin, we are also saved to
something -- to the task of cultivating God’s creation.
Genesis teaches that on the first five days, God did the work of
creating. But on the sixth day, He made human beings in His image
to carry on His wor -- to develop the raw materials of the world
He had created.
This is called the “cultural
commission,” just as binding as the “Great
Commission.” It means our faith is intended to encompass
every part of life, every sphere of work, every aspect of the
world.
In short, our faith must be a complete worldview,
the basic set of beliefs that function as a set of glasses helping
us to see all of reality through God’s eyes. If God is
creator and sovereign over everything, as we confess He is, then
everything finds its identity and meaning in relationship to Him
-- not only our spiritual life but also our work, politics,
science, education, the arts, etc.... Read this in full at

CHURCHES SPIRITUALLY 'VITAL,' STUDY SAYS
A congregation's health depends less on theology than
methodology, according to a first look at an upcoming national
study by Hartford Seminary's Institute for Religion Research.
Faith Communities Today 2008, due out Oct. 15, paints an
overall sobering picture of congregational life in America.
Congregations in general are losing ground in attendance,
financial health and overall vitality. At the same time, many are
bucking the trend, reporting spiritual vitality and a sense of
mission and purpose despite challenges like finances and conflict.
Beginning in the 1970s, conventional wisdom said that
churches holding to a conservative theology and putting high
demands on members grew numerically, while more liberal
congregations became increasingly secular and irrelevant, and
inevitably declined.
Adding a more recent measure of
whether a church perceives itself to be "spiritually vital
and alive," however, the Hartford researchers found that
vitality peaked at both the conservative and liberal extremes of
the theological spectrum.... Read this in full at

BIGGEST US
CHURCHES 'CONTEMPORARY, EVANGELICAL'
Two new reports on the size and strength of American
congregations present contrasting pictures of church life today.
The October issue of Outreach magazine is all about growth. It
lists the 100 largest U.S. churches, based on attendance
statistics gathered by LifeWay Research, Nashville. Leading the
list, as in 2008, is Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church, Houston;
43,500 attend weekend worship. Lakewood could almost swallow the
second and third place megachurches in one gulp.
But the
newest trend in church growth is exemplified by the No. 2 ranked
church's cross-country reach. Lifechurch.tv transmits pastor Craig
Groeschel's worship services from the church's studio home in
Edmond, Okla., to 13 locations, reaching 26,776 people in average
weekend worship attendance.... Read this in full at

SURVEYS REVEAL
'WIDELY DIVERGENT' VIEWS OF RELIGIOUS US ACTIVISTS
First-ever polls comparing conservative and progressive
activists are revealing to what degree these groups diverge when
it comes to issue priorities, issue positions, and beliefs about
Scripture
While the majority of both groups say religion
is important in their lives, for example, they have strikingly
different beliefs about Scripture. Nearly half of conservatives
(48%) believe Scripture to be the literal word of God, while only
3% of progressives shared the same view, according to the 2009
Religious Activist Surveys conducted by the Bliss Institute of
Applied Politics at the University of Akron in partnership with
Public Religion Research.
The surveys also show how
religious activists part ways on issue priorities.... Read this in

'PILOTS FOR
CHRIST' LIFT PATIENTS ON A WING AND A PRAYER
On one of his healthiest days since being diagnosed in June
2008 with Stage 4 neuroblastoma, 9-year-old Tyler Trembley raced
joyfully across a playground, his mother looking on. After heavy
bouts of chemotherapy and surgery to remove a tumor wrapped around
his kidney -- involving thousands of miles of air travel to
specialty hospitals -- the third-grader is getting better.
"I'm
witness to how awe-inspiring this life is," said his mother,
Sherry Trembley, who praised the help of Pilots for Christ, an
aviation ministry, and others including Angel Flight, which also
aids those with medical needs by providing free flights for
medical care. "Every day," she said with gratitude, "my
heart flutters."
A single mom to Tyler and his twin
sister, Hannah, Trembley admits she was overwhelmed last summer,
and soon exhausted, trying to get Tyler to Children's Hospital in
Birmingham, Ala., and then to Sloane-Kettering Memorial Clinic in
New York.... Read this in full at

THE RIGHT WAY TO
PRAY? The
Brooklyn Tabernacle, a 3,500-seat evangelical prayer palace in
downtown Brooklyn, was built in 1918 as one of the largest and
grandest vaudeville houses in North America. It is still a hot
ticket. Its youngish, racially diverse congregation packs the pews
each week to praise God and bask in the sounds of a Grammy-winning
250-voice gospel choir. But the tabernacle is more than just a
popular church. It is also a destination for evangelicals from all
around the United States and beyond, laymen and ministers alike,
who come as acolytes to study prayer.... Read this in full at

NEW STUDY REVEALS
CONCERNS AND IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN
COLLEGE STUDENTS
When they're not sending text messages or tweets, today's
Christian college students are spending time on Facebook. A lot of
it. One in every three says he's spending 1-2 hours a day on the
site; twelve percent report using it 2-4 hours each day and 2.8
percent report usage at 4-7 hours a day. That's in addition to
other forms of social media and electronic usage such as video
games, blogs, e-mail and Internet browsing.
The data comes
from a new and unprecedented study by two Gordon College faculty
members, Bryan C. Auday, professor of psychology, and Sybil
Coleman, professor of social work. Released at the 60th
anniversary conference for the Religion Newswriters Association in
Minneapolis, Sept. 10, 2009, the study -- "Pulling Off the
Mask: The Impact of Social Networking Activities on Evangelical
Christian College Students . . . A Self-Reported Study" -- is
the only one of its kind to target and give voice specifically to
evangelical Christian college students. It explores the specific
trends, behaviors and attitudes Christian students perceive of
themselves regarding social media usage.... Read this in full at

HUMAN FAMILY: 7
BILLION BY 2011
by Erich Bridges The latest world population numbers and
forecasts tell us what we already know: The human family lives
more and more in the global South and East. The rest of us are
becoming country cousins, scattered through the isolated
hinterlands of the North and the West. That's an absurd
exaggeration, of course -- but not as absurd as you might think.
Most of humanity is in Asia and Africa. If "God so loved the
world," as Scripture says, it stands to reason that He would
focus passionate attention on the places where most of "the
world" lives. So should we.
The global population
will reach 7 billion in 2011, only 12 years after topping 6
billion in 1999, according to the Population Reference Bureau
(PRB). The Washington, DC-based agency released its annual World
Population Data Sheet in August with accompanying analysis of
global demographics by region, age, income, gender and other
categories.... Read this in full at

'SEE YOU AT THE
POLE' SET FOR SEPT. 23
More than 3 million teenagers in 20 countries are expected to
participate Sept. 23 in the 19th annual "See You At the Pole"
school prayer rally.
This year's event also marks the 10th
anniversary of the massacre at Wedgwood Baptist Church in Fort
Worth, Texas, when a gunman sprayed bullets across a sanctuary
where students were gathered for a rally celebrating that
morning's See You At the Pole rally, held that year on Sept. 15.
Four teens attending the rally were among the seven people killed
by the gunman.
See You At the Pole, which originated in
early 1990 among a small group of teenagers in Burleson, Texas,
"is a student-initiated, student organized, and student-led
event" that calls on students to pray for their schools,
friends teachers, government and nation, asking God to bring moral
and spiritual awakening to their campuses and countries, according
to a statement on the event website.
"See You At the
Pole is not a demonstration, political rally, nor a stand for or
against anything," the statement said. "See You At the
Pole is all about prayer. It's about [students]coming together and
laying aside all of the labels and groups for one day, to simply
engage with God in prayer and connect with fellow Christians in
unity around the flag pole." .... Read this in full at

DEADLY VIRUS
by Michael Duduit H1N1 is the new danger on the horizon.
This particular flu virus has already taken a number of lives, and
experts fear many more could be in danger. As a result, we're
being told -- by everyone from President Obama to Sesame Street's
Elmo -- that we should wash our hands frequently and sneeze into
our sleeves. Such precautions can help avoid unnecessary spread of
the virus.
There's an even bigger danger our world faces,
and it poses a far greater hazard than any flu -- though it does
seem to spread virally. It is called sin, and it will destroy
everything we have and all that we are if not dealt with.
The
problem is, washing your hands won't help. In fact, there's not
enough hand sanitizer on the globe to deal with your sin. The only
thing that will help is to sanitize your soul, and that takes a
Doctor who is unlike any other. You and I need the Great Physician
because He is the only one who can cleanse sin and bring permanent
healing to our lives.
You have the privilege of sharing
the good news about the cure. Isn't it exciting to be in the

HYBELS REDIRECTS
CHRISTIANS TO 'THE FORGOTTEN WAY'
Addressing the concerns and needs of a 25,000-member
congregation, Pastor Bill Hybels launched a sermon series
September 13 challenging them to return to Jesus' way, or what he
called the "forgotten way."
"We're going to
... ask ourselves the question 'why did his way of living ever get
substituted for something else along the way? What wisdom became
so attractive and maybe so cheap that entire cultures abandoned
Jesus' way for alternate paths?'" Hybels told attendees at
Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill.
"The
Forgotten Way" series was born out of a desire to respond to
the 20,000 prayer requests they received this past Easter. Many of
them dealt with pace of life issues, human sexuality, conflict
resolution, and money.
Hybels is hoping to take the
teachings of Jesus from 2,000 years ago and focus them on the
needs of the congregation today while also contrasting the
teachings with the conventional wisdom of today's culture.... Read

EARLY SYMBOL
DEPICTING JUDAISM FOUND IN GALILEE
Israeli archaeologists have uncovered one of the earliest
depictions of a menorah, the seven-branched candelabra that has
come to symbolize Judaism, the Israel Antiquities Authority said.
The menorah was engraved in stone around 2,000 years ago
and found in a synagogue recently discovered by the Kinneret.
Pottery, coins and tools found at the site indicate the
synagogue dates to the period of the second Jewish temple in
Jerusalem, where the actual menorah was kept, said archaeologist
Dina Avshalom-Gorni of the Israel Antiquities Authority, according
to The Associated Press (AP), cited in The Jerusalem Post
newspaper.
The artist might have seen the menorah during a
pilgrimage and then recreated it in the synagogue, she suggested.
A small number of depictions of the menorah have surfaced
from the same period, she said, but this one was unique because it
was inside a synagogue and far from Jerusalem, illustrating the
link between Jews around Jerusalem and in the Galilee to the
north.... Read this in full at

NEW YORKER TRADES
LUSH LIFE FOR WATER WELLS
"The world would be better if more people lived like they
were made to live." For Scott Harrison, that meant leaving
the lavish life in the Big Apple and committing his life to the
1.1 billion people who don't have access to clean water.
After
ditching his Christian faith at 18 years of age, Harrison "had
been working at selfishness" for ten years, selling $350
bottles of vodka, promoting nightclubs and fashion events, and
hanging out with beautiful people. "I sold escapism and
excess for a living," Harrison told The Christian Post. He
should have been happy, he said, but he was instead confronted
with how arrogant and selfish he had become.
Realizing he
was spiritually bankrupt, Harrison began reading The Pursuit of
God, by A.W. Tozer, and praying. As he put it, he was "drinking
heavily and partying at night, but praying by day." It wasn't
until six months later that he decided to leave New York and
dedicate a year of his life in service to God and the poor. He
volunteered to serve as a photojournalist with Mercy Ships, a
global charity that operates hospital ships in developing
nations.... Read this in full at

CMA PHYSICIANS:
ABORTION MANDATES ARE 'LETHAL INJECTIONS TO HEALTHCARE REFORM'
As coordinator of the Freedom2Care (www.Freedom2Care.org)
coalition of over 50 organizations, the Christian Medical
Association (CMA, www.cmda.org) sent a letter to President Obama
indicating that over 10,000 individuals have signed a Freedom2Care
petition urging the President and Congress to protect conscience
rights and stop abortion mandates.
The letter to the
President notes that "the problem of discrimination in health
care and protecting conscience rights through both law and
regulation are key to protecting patients' access to health care
now and in the future."
CMA CEO Dr. David Stevens
said, "Our polling demonstrates that the American people by
two-to-one margins support conscience-protecting laws and the
conscience-protecting regulation that President Obama plans to get
rid of. Our national survey of nearly 3,000 faith-based healthcare
professionals reveals that conscience protections are vital to
continuing the faith-based medical care that millions of patients
depend upon." .... Read this in full at

PATIENCE
James A. Garfield, prior to serving as President of the United
States, was president of Hiram College in Ohio. One day a father
asked Garfield if there were a short-cut whereby his son could get
through college in less than the usual four years. He wanted his
son to get on with making money.
The college president
gave this reply: "Of course there is a way; it all depends on
what you want your boy to do. When God wants to grow an oak tree,
he takes 100 years. When he wants to make a squash, he only takes
two months."
LEADERSHIP
TIPS (BUSINESS, FAMILY, LIFE)
HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND? 16 ways you can know a leader has
lost his mind: #1 – He refuses to admit his mistakes.
#2 - He begins to blame the problems on people or
circumstances rather than actually seeking out what the problem
might be. #3 - He refuses to listen to the team assembled
around him. #4 - He fights every idea that isn't his own,
thinking his originality is what must keep the church afloat. #5
- He refuses to face reality. #6 - He is unwilling to make the
necessary changes because it would be highly unpopular. #7 -
He tries to listen to what everyone has to say about every
situation. #8 - He begins to believe that God's favor on his
life is because of how good he is rather than because of how good

CHURCH
ATTENDANCE DECLINING -- BUT NOT FOR THOSE WITH MORE DYNAMIC
APPROACHES A
recent study shows both widespread decline among American churches
and instances of astonishing growth and vitality. Many
tradition-bound churches are struggling to attract new members and
pay their bills, while a smaller group of churches has discovered
prosperity by embracing change and attracting younger members.
"The old way of doing things doesn't work for many
groups," said David A. Roozen, professor of religion and
society at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut, which conducted the
survey.
The survey found that less than 20% of the
churches said they were in good financial health in 2008 -- down
from 31% in 2000. Just 48% of the churches reported even modest
growth in 2008, compared to 58% in 2005.... Read this in full at

ATHEISTS GROUPS
DOUBLE IN SIZE IN TWO YEARS
The number of atheist or agnostic student groups on U.S.
campuses has more than doubled in the past two years -- from 80 to
162 -- according to the Secular Student Alliance (SSA), the
national organization for the secular student movement.
PZ
Myers, an outspoken atheist and associate professor of biology at
the University of Minnesota, Morris, suggested the growth could be
related to authors saying that it is okay to be "godless."
Myers, who last year angered Catholics when he publicly
tried to desecrate consecrated Communion wafers, writes a blog and
often speaks at SSA affiliate group meetings, where he urges
students to go public about their unbelief and foster a positive
image.... Read this in full at

LIFE’S
REALITY “The
coin of health has illness on the other side. The currency of joy
has sorrow on the reverse. Turn the coin of serenity and there is
the stamp of worry. You always have to take what is underneath and

calm upon turmoil. Each day has its night.”

FILLING
UP THE AFFLICTIONS OF CHRIST (book excerpt)
by John Piper Stephen Vaughan was an English merchant
commissioned by Thomas Cromwell, the king's adviser, to find
William Tyndale and inform him that King Henry VIII desired him to
come back to England out of hiding on the continent. In a letter
to Cromwell from Vaughan dated June 19, 1531, Vaughan wrote about
Tyndale (1494-1536) these simple words: "I find him always
singing one note." That one note was this: Will the King of
England give his official endorsement to a vernacular Bible for
all his English subjects? If not, Tyndale would not come. If so,
Tyndale would give himself up to the king and never write another
book. This was the driving passion of his life -- to see the Bible
translated from the Greek and Hebrew into ordinary English
available for every person in England to read.
Henry VIII
was angry with Tyndale for believing and promoting Martin Luther's
Reformation teachings. In particular, he was angry because of
Tyndale's book Answer to Sir Thomas More. Thomas More (famous
today for his book Utopia and as portrayed in the movie A Man for
All Seasons) was the Lord Chancellor who helped Henry VIII write
his repudiation of Luther called Defense of the Seven Sacraments.
Thomas More was thoroughly Roman Catholic and radically
anti-Reformation, anti-Luther, and anti-Tyndale. So Tyndale had
come under excoriating criticism by Thomas More. In fact, More had
a "near rabid hatred" for Tyndale and published three
long responses to him totaling nearly three-quarters of a million
words.... Read this in full at

FEAR
by David Jeremiah In 1991, Michigan's Timid Motorist
Program assisted 830 drivers across the Mackinac Bridge that is
five miles long and 200 feet high. The drivers were so scared of
heights that they couldn't drive their own cars. The same year,
more than a thousand motorists received assistance at Maryland's
Chesapeake Bay Bridge -- also 200 feet high and four miles long.
In spite of their destination being in plain sight and a
history of the bridges being safe, the drivers were paralyzed by
fear. The same thing happened to the nation of Israel when they
were ready to enter the Promised Land. The land was in plain
sight, and they had a history of God meeting their needs; but only
three people in the entire nation were willing to exercise their
faith and enter the land: Moses, Joshua, and Caleb. The rest said,
'We are not able to go up against the people, for they are
stronger than we' (Numbers 13:31). That generation of Israelites
never reached their destination. Instead, their fear paralyzed
them in the wilderness where they died.
"If you can
see your destination and have experienced God's faithfulness in
the past, don't let fear destroy your freedom." (Turning
Point Daily Devotional, 9-2-09)
GRAHAM'S
DAUGHTER: 'RELIGION IS AN IMPEDIMENT'
Anne Graham Lotz, the second of Billy and Ruth Graham's five
children, says it's all right: as long as you have a personal
relationship with Jesus, church doesn't really matter. Neither
does denomination. "Religion is an impediment to knowing
God," says Lotz, who is promoting a new book, The Magnificent
Obsession. "Procedures, rituals, creeds: how in the world can
they help you connect with God?....If you're sprinkled when you're
baptized or dunked when you're baptized, it doesn't matter as far
as your salvation goes."
Given her maiden name, you
would think that Lotz, an evangelist who travels around the world
urging people to come to Jesus, would embody old-fashioned,
conservative evangelism. Her father has always strongly advised
Christians to attend church; the Billy Graham Evangelistic
Asso-ciation website tells new Christians to make church a regular
part of their lives: "Whatever it meant to you in the past,
going to church can now become a rich and rewarding experience."

RELIGION
REPORTING IS LOSING ITS PROMINENCE IN AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS
There have been reductions in the number of reporters who
write about religion full time at all of the nation's biggest
newspapers, and the religion news beat has disappeared from
multiple midsize and smaller papers. The surviving newspaper
religion sections are getting smaller.
According to Debra
Mason, executive director of the Religion Newswriters Association,
the religion beat is not being targeted, but all specialty beats
at newspapers, including the environment, health, and education,
are suffering as newspapers, with shrinking budgets, allocate an
increasing fraction of their diminished newsroom staffs to general
