DOBSON RESIGNS AS
CHAIRMAN OF FOCUS ON THE FAMILY Conservative
evangelical leader James Dobson has resigned as chairman of Focus
on the Family but will continue to play a prominent role at the
organization he founded more than three decades ago. Dobson
notified the board of his decision Feb. 25, and the 950 employees
of the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based ministry were informed Feb.
27 at a monthly worship service, said Jim Daly, the group's
president and chief executive officer.
Dobson, 72, will
continue to host Focus on the Family's flagship radio program,
write a monthly newsletter, and speak out on moral issues, Daly
said. Dobson's resignation as board chairman "lessens his
administrative burden" and is the latest step in a succession
plan, the group said. Dobson began relinquishing control six years
ago by stepping down as president and CEO.... Read this in full

EVANGELICALS
PONDER DOBSON'S SUCCESSOR The
long-expected resignation of Focus on the Family's James Dobson
highlights an open secret among America's roughly 70 million
evangelicals: There are no obvious successors to the group of
evangelical leaders who created massive organizations or built up
media empires in the 1980s and '90s.
Mr. Dobson, 72, is one
of the last of a great generation of evangelical leaders. Some
have died: the Rev. Jerry Falwell, Moral Majority founder;
theologian Carl F.H. Henry; Florida pastor D. James Kennedy;
Campus Crusade for Christ founder Bill Bright; and Christian
philosopher Francis Schaeffer, who founded L'Abri
Fellowship.
Others have either retired or have passed on
the bulk of their duties, such as the Rev. Billy Graham, 90;
televangelist Pat Robertson, 78; author and activist Tim LaHaye,
83; and Prison Fellowship founder Chuck Colson, 77.
"It's
a changing of the guard," said Brian McLaren, 52, cited in
2005 by Time magazine as one of the 25 most influential
evangelicals in America.... Read this in full

PRESIDENTIAL
PRAYER EFFORT PROVES TO BE BIPARTISAN A
national grass-roots network that came together after the 9/11
terrorist attacks for the sole purpose of praying for the
president has lost more than 25,000 members since Barack Obama's
election last November. But in that same time, more than 41,000
have signed up. For John Lind, president of the Scottsdale,
Ariz.-based Presidential Prayer Team
(www.presidentialprayerteam.org), those figures indicate that the
ministry that aimed to be nonpartisan when it began in 2001 has
lived up to its mission. "The only ... president we've been
under has been (George W.) Bush, so you've got to be
realistic.”.... Read this in full

WHEN YOU'RE
DEPRESSED by
Mark R. McMinn Here are three questions to consider if you
think you or a loved one may be struggling with
depression.
First, ask the beyond sadness question. Life in
our sinstained world can be tough, and everyone feels the wear and
tear of it at various points in life. With depression, sadness
progresses to a point of persistent and deep emotional pain, often
coupled with hopelessness, irrational feelings of guilt, and
sometimes thoughts about suicide.
Second, ask the physical
symptom question. For many adults, depression is associated with
early morning waking, poor appetite, unintentional weight loss,
irritability, crying bouts, difficulty concentrating, and memory
lapses. To make matters worse, depression interferes with
motivation, so a depressed person is inclined to withdraw from the
activities and relationships that once brought happiness and joy
to his or her life.
Third, ask the impaired functioning
question. A person struggling with depression is likely to have
difficulty functioning in everyday life. Depression can lead to
lost productivity at work, strained relationships at home, and
declining passion for ministry.
For those who answer yes to
one or more of these three questions, it is time to seek help....

SURVEY: PARENTS
RELY ON PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OVER BIBLICAL GUIDANCE Although
most parents say they are trying to improve their parenting
skills, few look to the Bible or church for guidance, a new study
shows. A majority of parents (60%) heavily rely on their own
experiences growing up for parenting guidance but only one-fifth
say they receive a lot of guidance from sacred text such as the
Bible or Koran, the latest study by LifeWay Research finds. Even
fewer parents (15%) look to church as a source of guidance for
parenting.
The vast majority (96%) agree they consistently
try to be better parents but more than 6 in 10 completely ignore
parenting seminars and over half don't care for books by religious
parenting experts, according to the study.... Read this in full

WOMEN MORE LIKELY
THAN MEN TO PRAY, BELIEVE IN GOD Women
are more likely to profess belief in a God, pray and attend
religious services than men, according to a new analysis of survey
data. The Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public
Life offers new insight on sex and religiosity based on a previous
survey. After gleaning over its 2008 U.S. Religious Landscape
Survey, the Pew Forum found that women are more religious than men
on a variety of measures.
When it comes to women, 86% are
affiliated with a religion, 77% have absolutely certain belief in
a God or a universal spirit, 63% say religion is very important in
their lives, and 44% attend worship services at least weekly,
according to survey results.
The proportion of men who
claimed such religious behavior and beliefs was lower. Compared to
women, only 79% of men are affiliated with a religion, 65% have
absolutely certain belief in a God or a universal spirit, 49% say
religion is very important in their lives, and 34% attend worship
services at least weekly.
Women were also more likely than
men to have absolutely certain belief in a personal God, 58% to
45%.
The biggest difference in religious behaviors between
men and women was their prayer habits. Sixty-six percent of women
say they pray at least daily, leading men by 17 percentage points.
What accounts for this difference?.... Read this in full

NEW RESEARCH
EXPLORES HOW TECHNOLOGY DRIVES GENERATION GAP Technology
is fast becoming the latest driving force behind what is often
called the "generation gap." While Americans of every
age have become quite comfortable with and dependent on
technology, a new study by The Barna Group explores how technology
is shaping different experiences and expectations among
generations. Although all Americans -- both young and old --
benefit from technology, the generational divide brought on by
digital tools is significant. The key findings of the research
include the fact that each successive generation is adopting and
using technology at a significantly greater pace than their
predecessors. Yet, the study also shows the exponential reliance
on digital tools among Americans under the age of 25.
Technology
usage is not the only chasm between the young and old. Another gap
is each of the generation’s perceptions about technology.
Not surprisingly, younger adults are more likely to admit "gadget
lust" than is true of older adults. For instance, among the
youngest adult Americans -- those ages 18 to 24, a group the Barna
Group labels Mosaics -- more than one-fifth (22%) said they
consider owning the latest technology to be a very high priority
in life, compared to only one out of every 11 adults over the age
of 25 (9%).
Mosaics are the biggest technophiles. However,
when taken together, America’s two youngest generations
(Mosaics and Busters) are significantly more likely than the two
oldest cohorts (Boomers and Elders) to say a desirable lifestyle
is being at the cutting edge of technology.... Read this in full

GOD’S
LOVE “Right
from the beginning God’s love has reached, and from the
beginning man has refused to understand. But love went on
reaching, offering itself. Love offered the eternal…we
wanted the immediate. Love offered deep joy…we wanted
thrills. Love offered freedom…we wanted license. Love
offered communion with God Himself…we wanted to worship at
the shrine of our own minds. Love offered peace…we wanted
approval for our wars. Even yet, love went on reaching. And
still today, after two thousand years, patiently, lovingly, Christ
is reaching out to us today. Right through the chaos of our world,
through the confusion of our minds. He is reaching…longing
to share with us…the very being of God. His love still is
longing, His love still is reaching, right past the shackles of my
mind. And the Word of the Father became Mary’s little Son.
And His love reached all the way to where I was.” Gloria

'THE
BLUE PARAKEET' FACES INCONVENIENT VERSES Named
after a diminutive budgie, Scot McKnight's The Blue Parakeet
(Zondervan) offers itself as a charming book to which no one will
take exception. The cover even features the eponymous bird perched
cutely on a pair of binoculars.
This playful title is
shrewd, because the book's subtitle, Rethinking How You Read the
Bible, ushers readers into the volatile area of biblical
hermeneutics. Compared with writing a book about birds, writing
about a new way to read the Bible is about as tame as dancing on
the hood of a moving car with no one at the wheel.
McKnight
doubles down on potential peril by directing his efforts at some
of the most uncomfortable issues in Scripture. Many oft-neglected
verses are relatively mild, such as the ones about foot washing
and borrowing money with interest. These commandments elicit a
"whatever" shrug from many Christians. But there are
other verses, such as the ones about homosexuality and women in
ministry that, if ignored, may elicit anger from the same
Christians who never wash each other's feet and unthinkingly pay
6% on their mortgages.... Read this review in full

MOVIE POSTERS WITH
A HOLY EDGE by
Chris Herlinger In the beginning, there was light. And soon
after, it seems, there were movies.
And with movies came
movie posters—the “heralds” that drew people
into movie theaters, particularly during the Golden Age of
Hollywood: the 1920s through 1950s. This was a time “when
fantasy architecture made its visitors feel as though they were
entering into a sacred space,” says the Rev. Michael Morris,
a Dominican priest, film scholar and avid movie poster
collector.
But the posters -- some of them as monumentally
designed as the films they were advertising -- could be miniature
masterpieces in their own right. And, in fact, some were superior
to the films showing inside the theaters.... Read this in full

ANTI-PORN GROUPS
TARGET EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS Every
February, SouthPoint Foursquare Church reminds its younger members
here that "True Love Waits," part of a global
evangelical Christian campaign that stresses abstinence until
marriage.
A few days after Valentine's Day this year, 80
teenagers and some parents attended the church's weekly youth
night to hear a related message: Jesus loves porn stars, but
looking at pornography makes it much harder to find Him.
"We
feel that church should be the first ones to talk to you guys
about this," said Brandon Piety, the guest speaker from
XXXChurch, an organization aimed at helping Christians overcome
pornography addictions. "If you have a problem with porn,
you've got to talk to God, and you've got to go to someone you can
trust."
Previous generations had to seek out magazines
or movies, but now hardcore content is available anytime, free of
charge, to anyone with Internet access. Responding to this
increased accessibility, affordability, and anonymity, faith-based
organizations now offer their own strategies for overcoming
pornography addictions, targeting evangelicals and others who
consider the images sinful.... Read this in full

CHRISTIAN
FILMMAKERS CREATING AN INDUSTRY OF FAITH Fed
up with sex and violence in mainstream entertainment, conservative
Christians are turning out their own films. And they've made
surprising inroads. Take this quiz: What was the biggest grossing
independent film in 2008? No, not Slumdog Millionaire. Not Milk.
It was Fireproof, starring former teen idol Kirk Cameron. It was
all the talk of some 2,000 Christian movie fans gathering at the
San Antonio (Texas) Independent Christian Film Festival in
January. This crowd was markedly un-Hollywood, the men wearing
jeans and Polo shirts, the women in high necklines and low hems.
The lights had hardly dimmed for opening ceremonies when Doug
Philips, the festival's organizer, told the audience they were
drawing a battle line in the culture wars.
"We're here
to send a message to the world that we no longer want our children
immersed in toxic media which is in opposition to the Lord Jesus
Christ," he announced to the cheering crowd. "Christian
filmmaking is coming of age. Christian filmmaking is coming of
age!".... Read this in full

23RD PSALM FOR THE
WORKPLACE The
Lord is my real boss and I shall not want. He gives me peace,
when chaos is all around me. He gently reminds me to pray
before I speak and to do all things without murmuring and
complaining.
He reminds me that He is my Source and not my
job. He restores my sanity every day and guides my decisions
that I might honor Him in everything I do.
Even though I
face absurd amounts of emails, system crashes, unrealistic
deadlines, budget cutbacks, gossiping co-workers, discriminating
supervisors, and an aging body that doesn't cooperate every
morning, I will not stop--for He is with me!
His presence,
His peace, and His power will see me through. He raises me up,
even when they fail to promote me. He claims me as His own,
even when the company threatens to let me go.
His
faithfulness and love are better than any bonus check. His
retirement plan beats every 401K there is. When it's all said
and done, I'll be working for Him a whole lot longer and for that,
I bless His Name.

WHY CATHOLIC
INDULGENCES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK by
Bonnie Rochman It sounds too good to be true. Now, for a
limited time -- the year of St. Paul, to be specific, which ends
in June -- say a prayer, pop by a designated church, and qualify
for an indulgence that deducts time from your scorching sojourn in
the cleansing fires of purgatory.
Indulgences have been
part of Catholic doctrine since the Crusades. When the Church
offered them for sale in the 1500s -- call it mercy for money --
religious reformer Martin Luther protested. These days, they can't
be bought. "How does that MasterCard ad go?" muses
Sister Mary Ann Walsh, spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops. "Some things are priceless."
The
pardons have fallen by the wayside in the past few decades, but
they're being revived in conjunction with a new emphasis on the
importance of charity in Christian life. Catholicism, with 67
million followers in the US, is big on formulaic repetition of the
Hail Mary and "Our Father" variety. But the Vatican is
starting to move away from that and toward, according to the
church's Manual of Indulgences, a "greater zeal for the
exercise of charity."
It's no longer enough to repeat
a prescribed number of prayers; you also have to do good, such as
volunteer at a soup kitchen, help resettle refugees or donate to a
worthy cause. Much like how many high schoolers have to fulfill a
community-service requirement, Catholics are being urged to become
do-gooders. "The church's teaching has evolved," Walsh
says. "Part of indulgences is not just saying special
prayers, but also doing good works.".... Read this in full

MARCH:
IRISH-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH Originally
a religious holiday to honor St. Patrick, who introduced
Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century, St. Patrick’s
Day has evolved into a celebration for all things Irish. The
world’s first St. Patrick’s Day parade occurred on
March 17, 1762, in New York City, featuring Irish soldiers serving
in the English military. President Truman attended the parade in
1948. Congress proclaimed March as Irish-American Heritage Month
in 1995, and the president issues a proclamation each year.

THIS WEEK'S HYMN:
THE FAST, AS TAUGHT BY HOLY LORE Words:
Unknown author; found in two 11th century manuscripts in the
British Museum. Translated from Latin to English by John M.
Neale, 1854
The fast, as taught by holy lore, We keep in
solemn course once more; The fast to all men known, and
bound In forty days of yearly round.
The law and seers
that were of old In divers ways this Lent foretold Which
Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide, In after ages
sanctified.
More sparing therefore let us make The words
we speak, the food we take, Our sleep and mirth, and closer
barred Be every sense in holy guard.
In prayer together
let us fall, And cry for mercy, one and all, And weep before
the Judge’s feet, And His avenging wrath entreat.
Thy
grace have we offended sore, By sins, O God, which we
deplore; But pour upon us from on high, O pardoning One, Thy
clemency.
Remember Thou, though frail we be, That yet
Thine handiwork are we; Nor let the honor of Thy Name Be by
another put to shame.
Forgive the sin that we have
wrought; Increase the good that we have sought; That we at
length, our wanderings o’er, May please Thee here and
evermore.
We pray Thee, holy Trinity, One God,
unchanging Unity, That we from this our abstinence May reap
the fruits of penitence.

MARINE’S
PRAYER Almighty
Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make
me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to
my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed
and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my
loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my
family.
Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to
accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm.
Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance.
Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my
Country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me. Help me to wear
my uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the
traditions which I must uphold.
If I am inclined to doubt,
steady my faith; if I am tempted, make me strong to resist; if I
should miss the mark, give me courage to try again.
Guide
me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom by which I may
understand the answer to my prayer. Amen.
