     OUR PRINCIPAL MALADIES

"It is in vain, O men, that you seek within yourselves the cure for your miseries.  All your insight only leads you to the knowledge that it is not in yourselves that you will discover the true and the good.  The philosophers promised them to you, and have not been able to keep their promises... Your principal maladies are pride, which cuts you off from God, and sensuality, which binds you to the earth; and they have done nothing but foster at least one of these maladies.  If they have given you God for your object, it has only been to pander to your pride; they have made you think that you were like Him and resembled Him by your nature.  And those who have grasped the vanity of such a pretension have cast you down into the other abyss by making you believe that your nature was like that of the beasts of the field, and have led you to seek your good in lust, which is the lot of animals."  Blaise Pascal (1623-1662)

     OUR EVERYDAY BATTLE

"[Christ] tells us plainly, and without any qualifications, that we are involved in a war in which there is no room for neutrals.  Yet people attempt to evade His statement.  Generally speaking, these are the very people who are the quickest in laying the blame upon God for all the sorrow and sin in the world.  They argue that He could prevent it.  They excuse their own do-nothing attitude by making of evil's apparent predominance a ground for doubt of His loving kindness.  It never seems to occur to them to look for the cause in mankind."  Hugh Redwood, Live Coals

     A SKEPTICAL VIEW OF CHRISTIANITY

by J. Budziszewski, Ph.D.

   Let's start there: What's skepticism?

Doubting everything.

   There's your first mistake.

Already?  Why?

   You say a skeptic doubts everything.  What would it be like to doubt everything?

It would make you cautious.  You'd reason instead of accepting things blindly.  You wouldn't be taken in by falsehoods.

   Are you sure?  If you doubted everything, wouldn't you doubt the good of caution too?

Hmm.  Yeah, I guess you would.

   And if you doubted everything, wouldn't you doubt whether reasoning works?

I suppose that's true too.  But doubting everything would keep you from being taken in by falsehoods, wouldn't it?

   Yes, but wouldn't it also keep you from being "taken in" by truths?

Why?

   Because you can't know a truth unless you believe it, and you can't believe it unless you stop doubting it.

     CHRISTIAN BOOK SUMMARY

The spiritual fervor of the early church was contagious.  God used the church to both engage and to transform the culture; and the world has never been the same again.  Author Robert Lewis, founding pastor of Fellowship Bible Church in Little Rock, says the church needs to be in the bridge-building business.  Over this bridge, he says, the church must travel and prove its reality to a disbelieving world.

     SHINING A RAY OF LIGHT ON THAILAND'S SEX TRADE

by David Batstone

"My ongoing investigation of the slave trade -- 27 million people around the globe are trapped in forced labor at this moment -- took me to Southeast Asia this past week.  Prior to the trip, I had poured over a considerable amount of research about the trafficking of women and children for the sex trade in the region. Reading about the practice is disturbing enough; seeing it first hand proved to be overwhelming.

"In Cambodia and Thailand I visited several projects that care for individuals lucky enough to escape -- or be rescued -- from the bars and brothels that exploit them.  I cannot get out of my head the sight of the 50 girls between the ages of 7 and 12 who found safe haven in one rescue center in Cambodia.  To think that grown men used these innocent, slight girls for their sexual pleasures numbs the mind.  Thanks to the efforts of faith-based activists, these girls are now in a safe environment where they can imagine a better life"....

     LEADERSHIP TIPS (BUSINESS, FAMILY, LIFE)

"Virtually every leader in Scripture endured some type of conflict in his or her life.  The cost of following Christ is great.  We cannot become complacent with the status quo just to avoid conflict.  We must lead.  Yes, we must love the people, and we must console them when change becomes increasingly painful to them.  But we must lead.  We cannot be content with a life and a ministry that could be described in the epitaph: 'This leader avoided conflict well.'"

Thom S. Rainer (Breakout Churches: Discover How to Make the Leap)

     EXPLORING GOD'S WILL TOGETHER

The Thorpes, an Illinois family, desperately needed beds for their three children.  Having outgrown the crib and small beds, the kids were sleeping on the floor.  The family wanted to follow God's will in every area of their lives, so they gathered to pray about this need.  As they prayed, the parents remembered the verse, "Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another" (Romans 13:8).  Since they were trying to get out of debt, they sensed God reminding them that charging new beds on a credit card wasn't His best for them.  "Then, Lord, show us Your way and please provide beds," one of the kids prayed.   "Or open a way for us to find a good deal on used beds at a garage sale," petitioned the oldest.  One night a few weeks later, the parents were out on a date.  While the kids were at home, a furniture store delivery truck pulled up and unloaded three brand-new beds....

     CHARITABLE GIVING IN U.S. NEARS NEW HIGH

The urgent needs created by three major natural disasters - the tsunami in Asia, earthquake in Pakistan and hurricanes Rita, Katrina and Wilma - drove American philanthropy to its highest level since the end of the technology boom, a new study shows.  The report by the Giving USA foundation estimates that in 2005 Americans gave $260.28 billion, a rise of 6.1%, which approaches the inflation-adjusted high of $260.53 billion that was reached in 2000.

About half of the overall increase of $15 billion went directly to aid victims of the disasters. The rest of the increase, meanwhile, may still be traced to the disasters since they may have raised public awareness of other charities.

     THE JORDAN RIVER IS DEEP AND WIDE NO MORE

Over-use of water from the southern stretch of the Jordan River threatens to dry it up and devastate one of the world's most important religious sites.  The warning comes from conservationists, Christian groups, and the heads of local authorities in the region and there is mounting fear of a natural disaster that would have far-reaching consequences.

     TAKE ON TASKS

by Pat Morley

"I noticed something interesting the other day in John 4:1-2, the Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.

"Notice that Jesus didn't baptize, but tasked his disciples.  Remember also sending them out two by two on short trips, sending them to get a donkey for him to ride on, and sending them to prepare a room for them to eat the Passover meal.

"Men are made for task, for mission.  Here's what Jesus had to say: "This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples" (John 15:8).  At some point, every true believer quivers a bit when he reads that text.  Once the grace and love of Christ sinks in, a man won't be able to contain himself.  He will feel compelled to do something to serve his Lord.

"To God be the glory for the great things he has done and continues to do!"

     SINGING THROUGH THE LORD'S PRAYER, PART 1

by Dr. Ray Pritchard

A few years ago I wrote a book on the Lord's Prayer called And When You Pray.  Shortly after I turned in the manuscript but before the book was published, I spent a week speaking at Word of Life in Schroon Lake, New York.  I spent several afternoons walking the streets of that quaint village, praying the Lord's Prayer and singing hymns and choruses.  I would say a phrase from the prayer and then begin to sing something that went with that theme.  It occurred to me that I should compile those hymns and choruses into a list.  That became a last-second Appendix to the book called Singing Through the Lord's Prayer.  In light of my recent entries on congregational singing (May 21, May 22, May 23, May 27 and May 30), I thought this would be a good follow-up to show how good music (traditional and contemporary) can be related to great texts of the Bible.  This list is obviously suggestive, not exhaustive.  Feel free to make add your suggestions in the Comments section on the Keep Believing website.

     MOVING HEAVEN AND EARTH

(Fast Company)  When it comes to global warming, Richard Cizik and Jim Ball are hell-bent on making fellow evangelicals see the light.  "This has been perceived as a left-wing issue, not a mainstream issue or a spiritual issue, but we're changing that," Cizik says.  Cizik has heard all the objections.  He rejects them.  "We're on a collision course of monumental proportion," he says.  "Twenty million to 30 million people could be victims.  As evangelicals we can't just ignore it and hope it goes away."  According to polls, 70% of 1,000 evangelical respondents believe climate change is a threat to future generations.  Half believe something should be done now, even if that causes economic fallout.  "There's a leadership transition under way," says Cizik.  "We are the future, and the old guard is reaching up to grasp its authority back, like in a horror movie where a hand comes out of the grave."  Read this article in full at

     CONSIDER

"Try to exclude the possibility of suffering which the order of nature and the existence of free-wills involve, and you find that you have excluded life itself."  C.S. Lewis

     VERSE TO PONDER

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge."  Psalm 19:1-2

     THIS WEEK'S HYMN: ONCE TO EVERY MAN AND NATION

Words: James R. Lowell, 1845

Music: Thomas J. Williams, 1890

Once to every man and nation, comes the moment to decide,

In the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side;

Some great cause, some great decision, offering each the bloom or blight,

And the choice goes by forever, 'twixt that darkness and that light.

Then to side with truth is noble, when we share her wretched crust,

Ere her cause bring fame and profit, and 'tis prosperous to be just;

Then it is the brave man chooses while the coward stands aside,

Till the multitude make virtue of the faith they had denied.

By the light of burning martyrs, Christ, Thy bleeding feet we track,

Toiling up new Calv'ries ever with the cross that turns not back;

New occasions teach new duties, time makes ancient good uncouth,

They must upward still and onward, who would keep abreast of truth.

Though the cause of evil prosper, yet the truth alone is strong;

Though her portion be the scaffold, and upon the throne be wrong;

Yet that scaffold sways the future, and behind the dim unknown,

Standeth God within the shadow, keeping watch above His own.

     GOD FAQ

Question 79: May not true believers, by reason of their imperfections, and the many temptations and sins they are overtaken with, fall away from the state of grace ?

Answer: True believers, by reason of the unchangeable love of God, and his decree and covenant to give them perseverance, their inseparable union with Christ, his continual intercession for them, and the Spirit and seed of God abiding in them, can neither totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace, but are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.
