"Our children will define the

THE SOUPER BOWL OF CARING
Teens across the nation are
transforming Super Bowl Sunday into the nation's largest youth-led day of
giving through Souper Bowl of Caring.
This Super Bowl weekend, teens armed with soup pots will be
collecting dollar bills at churches, retail outlets, and Super Bowl
parties. Youth from all 50 states
will raise funds to benefit local soup kitchens, food banks, and
shelters. In the last 15 years,
Souper Bowl of Caring has collected more than $28 million for local
charities.

TOP QUARTERBACK RECRUIT AIMS TO STAY GROUNDED IN CHRIST
Living with acclaim and accolades could
overwhelm an 18-year-old recruited by the nation's top college football
teams and featured in an ESPN documentary. His decision to commit to the University
of Florida
created a media frenzy across the state and
beyond.
But when Tim Tebow was asked to
recount the record-setting statistics of his high school career, the
Florida High School Player of the Year said he could not. "I'm sure someone kept the stats,
but I haven't kept track," Tebow, a member of First
Baptist
Church
in Jacksonville,
said.
Nor does he surf the Internet, where
dozens of stories and scouting reports have been written about the
talented young athlete. Instead,
the dual-threat quarterback for St.
Augustine's Nease
High School
has been taught that honoring God is more important than athletic
accomplishments....

GOOGLE'S CHINESE WEBSITE CRITICIZED FOR CENSORSHIP
Although Google is fighting a U.S.
Justice Department probe into Internet pornography, it has begun
acquiescing to the Chinese government.
Google announced Jan. 24 that "it will block politically
sensitive terms on its new China search site," as reported by
Reuters, "and will not offer e-mail, chat and blog publishing
services" -- restrictions that "go further than many of its
biggest rivals in China."

PAPAL ENCYCLICAL EXPLORES DIVINE, HUMAN LOVE
For his first papal encyclical Pope
Benedict XVI explains the difference between love and lust. In the letter to his bishops the pope
declares that eros, or erotic love, is different from agape, a Greek word
that means unconditional, spiritual, and selfless love. It attempts to
restore a proper understanding of love, saying that healthy human love
derives from, and reflects, God's love for mankind. The document condemns
all efforts to reduce human love to a merely physical attraction. At the
same time, it explains that eros merges into agape in Christian marital
love. Read this article at

BONHOEFFER MOVIE ON TV
"Bonhoeffer," an acclaimed
dramatic documentary about theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, tells the
story of the young German pastor who offered one of the first clear
voices of resistance to Adolf Hitler and the rise of the National
Socialist (Nazi) Party. Bonhoeffer
openly challenged his church to stand with the Jews in their time of
need. Eventually, he joined a plot
to kill Hitler.
"Bonhoeffer," airing on
PBS Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, in conjunction with the 100th anniversary celebration
of Bonhoeffer's birth (Feb. 4, 1906), mixes archival footage, some of it
never before seen in the US, with the words of Bonhoeffer himself, read
by Austrian actor Klaus Maria Brandauer (Out of Africa), and interviews
with friends, family and students of Bonhoeffer; Archbishop Desmond Tutu
of South Africa; Eberhard Bethge, Bonhoeffer's biographer and best
friend; and historians and theologians.

HOW TO RESIST THE DEMONS THAT ACCOMPANY INFLUENCE AND SAVVY
Evangelicals have wrestled with
their relationship to power. When in a position of influence, they
leverage power to better the lives of their neighbors. Cultural savvy
enables them to successfully translate the gospel for a changing world.
But it's a double-edged sword -- influence and savvy can also dull the
gospel's transcendence.
Evangelicals achieve a royal position, but soon they're using a
worship service to Almighty God to hawk Justice Sunday III. They worry that the culture has
forgotten the meaning of Christmas, but they cancel Sunday worship
because it's Christmas. They fret
because of their culture's biblical illiteracy, but sign up for the
Sunday school class on their pet social-justice cause rather than the Bible
or theology track. In short, they complain that the church has sold out
to culture, but they subconsciously give their allegiance to a political
or social subculture and champion its agenda.... Read this editorial at

AMERICANS: WORLD'S WORST SAVERS
Americans are among the world's most
cash-strapped people, according to the latest semi-annual survey from
ACNielsen. Nearly a quarter (22%) of Americans have no money left once
they've paid for their essential living expenses and spent their
discretionary dollars. That puts
the US
at the top of a list of 42 countries for saving futility. The US
is neck and neck with Portugal. Others in the top 10 for most
cash-strapped countries included Canada,
No. 3, at 19%, the United
Kingdom (No. 4,
17%) and France
(No. 5, 16%). In contrast, only 3
percent of respondents in Thailand
were not able to save money.

ONLINE SAFETY TIPS FOR TEENS
1. Never give your password
out. If someone gains access to
your password they can read your mail, buy stuff with your credit card
information, & obtain personal & identifiable information. They can change your profile, play
pranks using your name, & possibly get you kicked off your
service. They can also change your
password & lock you out of your account.
Choose a password that is easy for
you to remember but cannot be easily guessed. You may want to change your password
frequently, at least once a month (but make sure you write it down so you
don't forget). Be careful if
someone is watching you enter your password -- they may look over your
shoulder & steal it. He/she
who controls the password controls everything.

THIS WEEK'S HYMN: MY MASTER WAS A WORKER
Words: William Tarrant (1853-1928)
Music: adapted & harmonized by
William Monk, 1868
My Master was a worker,
With daily work to do,
And he who would be like Him
Must be a worker, too.
Then welcome honest labor,
And honest labor's fare,
For where there is a worker,
The Master's man is there.
My Master was a comrade,
A trusty friend and true,
And he who would be like Him,
Must be a comrade, too.
In happy hour of singing,
In silent hours of care,
Where goes a loyal comrade,
The Master's man is there.
My Master was a helper,
The woes of life He knew,
And he who would be like Him
Must be a helper, too.
The burden will grow lighter,
If each will take a share,
And where there is a helper,
The Master's man is there.
Then, brothers brave and manly,
Together let us be,
For He, who is our Master,
The Man of men was He.
The men who would be like Him
Are wanted everywhere,
And where they love each other
The Master's men are there.
