Kathy Wade Leads Peer Group Counselors

By Tassanee Foust

Central's Peer Leaders strive to help freshmen make the adjustment to life in high school. The group is led by advisors Ms. Jean Evans and Mr. David Hicks and consists of twelve seniors. The Peer Leaders work in pairs which include Joel Castillo and Tauheedah Muhammad, Joel Garcia and Valarie Smith, Vernitt Hoheb and Jennifer Zeis, Micheal Rose and Kathy Wade, Erik Valko and Asiah Yates, and last but definitely not least Philip Stone and Tassanee Foust.

The process of becoming a peer leader is similar to applying for a job. First, you have to fill out an application. After the applications are reviewed, interviews are set up in which two applicants are placed in a room with the two advisors and the twelve leaders. During the interview the advisors ask a variety of questions: examples include, "What color best describes you?" and "Are you a follower or a leader?"

The selection process is very intense. "They asked me questions about my personal life, how I act in and out of school, my reliability and what will be different if I became a Peer Leader" said current peer leader Erik Valko.

In order to become a peer leader you must apply in your junior year. The leaders are not chosen based on their grades but I'm sure that plays a crucial part in the selection process.
