While the Cup Went to Brazil,
The World Stays to
Play at Central

By Alexia Clarke

Many countries have representatives on the Central High School soccer team. There are Cape Verdeans, Portuguese, Brazilians, Jamaicans, Haitains, Native born Americans, Thais, and Spanish players.

They play a number of styles which Mr.Robert Woods as coach has to blend so they can learn from each other and make the game more complete.

Asked how Mr. Woods gets the different ethnic groups to come together and play as a team, he replied, "I put them in pairs with people from different countries. In scrimmage I mix the ethnic groups. I also praise them for things that contribute to team spirit and fair, unselfish play. The members basically get along, although, at first, they tend to group ethnically. They have good skill but they don't always click as a team ."

Since moving into the FCIAC the soccer team has remained above .500 and have beaten some good teams. They haven't won the FCIAC yet but they definitely have the skill to get there.

On the subject of the World Cup, Mr. Woods said, "I was amazed the American team did as well as they did. They showed they belong in top level soccer competition and that they are getting better and better."

Finally , asked what he thought about the future of soccer in the U.S. Mr. Woods replied, " I see thousands of kids around the state playing soccer and getting high level coaching. People are utilizing all fields for soccer. Everyone is playing soccer. With this amount of organization and with our best athletes playing the game the U.S chances for World Cup victory are unlimited."
