Central Riders Gear Up for Spring Tourney

By Dione Smith

A team of Central students will enter a wheelchair competition in Glastonbury in the Spring. Over one hundred participants from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut will compete in speed races, an obstacle course, softball, and tennis ball throwing.

The new team consists of junior Adrian Nunez, sophomore Joel Robles, freshmen Elliot Calderon, Ralph Garcia and Gabriel Nunez.

Some of the students are veterans of the competition. Elliot, a superb competitor for seven years, has earned twelve gold medals, nine silver medals, and six bronze medals. "I like it because it is a day when you can talk with people from different places," he said.

Joel Robles has won two gold medals, one for the obstacle course, and the other in the tennis throw. "I just go there to have fun," said Joel.

Gabriel received first place in the obstacle course, and second place awards for the tennis throw, 25 meters, and 45 meters. "I entered the games last year for the first time, and I have a good record in four events, but I want there to be more games like football and basketball," he said.

Adrian is looking forward to his first competition. "I would like to go to the races, because I have never been, and I hear from the other team members that it is something you can't miss!" said Adrian.

Although Ralph will not enter the competition this year, he joins aides Blanca, Jim, and Muhammed and Nurses Blackett and Cordova in supporting his friends and teammates.
