Pijar Tours Slave Forts in Ghana

By Adrienne Carter

Mr. Anthony Pijar had a wonderful experience visiting the country of Ghana in Africa.

Pijar was hired by a publishing company to take photographs of various slave forts in Ghana for a book project examining the forts and their historical importance. "Some of the slave forts are in ruins while others are erect and preserved to serve as a reminder of history," explained Pijar.

While in Ghana Mr. Pijar also had the chance to meet the people and learn a little bit about their lives. "The people I met in Ghana were sincere, genuine, and very caring for others. A professor from St. Augustine secondary school postponed his schedule the day after Christmas and invited me to his house to answer my questions. We talked for more than four hours. That's just one example of the sincerity and generosity shown by the Ghanaians," explained Pijar.

During Pijar's visit he learned that our school systems are very similar. "They have the same number of days, same academic disciplines, but they don't have as much equipment, computers or textbooks. The students are hungry for knowledge: they want to learn as much as possible," observed Pijar.
